BA Crew Robbery in São Paulo?

Is it true that some BA crewmembers were robbed of cash, passports and ID's at gun-point recently in a coffee shop across the street from the hotel in São Paulo?

I've never had any problems in GRU and would like to know if this is true.

caevans, I have edited your post .
Presuming that BA, like all other airlines, has told its crews not to mention the name of the HOTAC in public.

Hi

Can't confirm this incident however I do know that SAO can be VERY dodgy.

A close friend of mine was drugged, assaulted and robbed a couple of years ago while there. She had been having a coffee near the hotel and someone spiked her drink.

The next thing she remembers is the FO and CSD breaking into her hotel room when she missed call. She was barely conscious, had been physically attacked and had to spend a week or so in hospital recovering.

It really shocked me to the core. Just be careful out there!

Last year my colleague was identified as a target in the arrivals hall at GRU, his car was followed by a motorcycle, when it was stopped in traffic on the motorway in to town the motorcyclist smashed the car window and held him up with what you will all better identify as a sub machine gun, in broad daylight, in traffic. Shortly before that a coach load of businessmen (from Germany I believe) was held up Dick Turpin style in the same place.

In many countries the poverty gap means that life on the streets carries a high risk as most of the wealthy lives behind walls, leaving you and your nice watch as a rare target of opportunity.

Be careful !

Don't get me wrong, I feel sympathy for the people involved, but sometimes they should take the advice given on the crew briefing sheet
ONLY wear the minimum amount of jewellery. Gold rings, necklaces and watches are tempting and favourite targets
. Some people can be their own worst enemies

Your friend was drugged, assaulted and robbed but later she was sleeping in her hotel room, wasn't she? Well, some questions: If someone spiked her drink how did she go to her room? By herself? If she went alone was she really unaware of her situation? Or did she go along with her new mate(s)? What crap hotel did she stay?
I’ve heard about some cases like that, but involving some people that decided to go to some nightclubs not recommended for decent human being. Sao Paulo is really a dangerous place but some guys like to go intentionally beyond reasonable limits even for the safest places in rich countries.
Dangerous has been everywhere... in London as well.

An American Airlines flight attendant had his drink drugged in Sao Paulo. I don't know where he was at the time but it seems the other person seduced him and offered him the drink. After that he even had his clothes robbed... This happened a few weeks ago.

Next time you are in a nightclub or bar in Sao Paulo becareful if someone suddenly start falling in love with you! They might have bad intentions....

No need to be quite so aggressive Hamil. The events leading up to the attack and the attack itself were complex and I abridged the incident heavily to get the point across.

In answer to your some of your questions:

"If someone spiked her drink how did she go to her room?"

If you knew anything about the so called 'date rape' drugs you would be aware that one of the effects of rohipnol and similar sedatives is not only amnesia but compliance. She and her doctors assume that whoever spiked her coffee told her to to go to her hotel. In her altered state she did.

She was assaulted we assume while in her hotel room, not to go into too much detail here but she knew that she had been raped.

The attacker/attackers then trashed the room looking for valuables. They took her camera and other items.

"What crap hotel did she stay in"

The crew hotel Hamil..my point being that a nice hotel in one of the better areas doen not protect against attack.

She did not go to some dicey nightclub or go trawling through divey back streets - Her only mistake was going out alone to a coffee house a few minutes walk from where we stay.

She learnt her lesson in the very hardest of ways I just wanted to warn others of the dangers.

The effects of this drug are insidious and easily accessible in many countries. Assault, robberies and rape are usually the motive and as stated, the victim appears compliant--perhaps wobbly, but capable. This is happening to F/D and C/C members everywhere, in addition to other industry travellers.

It takes days for the amnesia to clear and by then the suspects are hard to catch. A friend of mine was raped by a business associates when the two of them were having dinner and she wasn't drinking anything but water. She thinks he put it into her glass when she went to the bathroom. By the time she put the pieces of the puzzle together, she no longer had evidence to prosecute.

I would highly recomment that anyone travelling be very guarded and insist in new beverages if you leave them unattended at any time! Unfortunately, if there someone inside the cafe/bar, it becomes difficult.

Sad world...be careful out there!
