Upgrading to higher class?

Hi,
Im a soldier off on a "work" trip to Canada. Flying by BMI to Calgary tomorrow. How easy (or hard!) is it to upgrade? Any tips?
Please dont shoot me down for asking, as my boss always said "if you dont ask, you dont get".
Thanks in advance.

Calgary with BMI? Are you sure it's not BA? BA fly to calgary and so do Air Canada. It could be a BMI codeshare flight ( through star alliance) but actually operated by Air Canada.

Regarding an upgrade, airlines always upgrade their frequent fliers first and most upgrades are done by the ground staff unless the cabin crew or flight crew know you personally! You can always ask although if its BA they will smile and mention the upgrade price !!

have a good flight and fingers crossed you get a better more comfortable seat!!

I have checked and it looks like Air Canada. But on the BMI website says they go to Calgary but as someone has pointed out, codeshare.
Army have booked it for me. If a military person flew on long haul the default setting was fly business class. But nowadays, if they can save money, its economy for me tomorrow.
Before anyone complains about the business class thing, depending where you were going and reasons why, you maybe expected to get on with your job as soon as you land. So the added comfort enabled sleep etc. To be honest ill sleep standing up if i have to and usually fly about on a Hercules Transport aircraft (sleep on top of the netted cargo!), but as i was going civvy, was wondering if upgrading was as easy as the films!

Well as is seems that you got to slum it in Air Canada's economy, and not your beloved netting! Maybe you could change your name to 'Rupert farquis Steeple-Bumstead(if its not already!)and turn up wearing some frightfully loud coloured courdoroy slacks/shirt/blazer and cravat and tell the check-in staff that your father is a 'jolly important' chap, and it would be in their best interests to upgrade you........
