India court grounds 'fat' flight attendants
An Indian court has upheld the right of state-owned Air India to ground overweight flight attendants, a report said.
Lawyers for the airline told the court the attendants were moved from flight duty to ground duty when they failed to meet minimum physical fitness standards, the Hindu newspaper reported.
The Delhi High Court said the attendants' contracts stipulated their jobs could be terminated if they put on too much weight, according to the paper.
The bench, made up of Justice AK Sikri and Justice JR Midha, said the state-run airline needed fit flight attendants to compete with private rivals in India's fiercely competitive aviation market.
The entry of private airlines in the business has resulted in severe competition," the judges said in their ruling."
The airline "has to meet this challenge by ensuring that its air hostesses and cabin crew members remained physically fit."
"There has been much debate about skinny bodies vis-a-vis healthy bodies, but there is no scope for any debate on overweight people," the judges added.
"It is universally accepted that overweight people have tendency to suffer from diseases," the judges said.

It does seem a bit outdated. I've worked with some proper skinny bints in my time, and I'd be concerned about half of them being able to access liferafts, etc. And the other half would be worried about breaking a nail.....
And no, I am not some overweight bifter with a 'jealousy complex' (before anyone jumps down my throat...) - I am a healthy 9 and a half stone, 5ft 7inch tall biatch.

I believe airlines in the ME are like this still-obsessed with appearance etc. How sad!
Yes as crew we need to take care of ourselves but still.
The 'Singapore Girls' are an example of this. Beautiful, lovely ladies but so petite and fragile...and servile.
Thank God I live in a country where they don't weigh you before flights, check your skin and tell you to lose weight!

Disagree just a tad, no offense intended.
I guess it depends on what you consider the scope of our job is.
To me we are safety and service professionals. Who I believe should be physically able to carry out all emergency procedures plus being able to walk down the aisle without hitting the pax. I also believe we should look well groomed and if at all possible, just a tiny little bit glam.
If I could decide, both anorectic and obese colleagues would be grounded and coached to make healthier life-style choices. Thereby helping them to return to being fit for flight and fit to look at.
and please note, I did NOT say we need to be beautiful! I said well groomed & fit enough for both cabin and safety duties.

You have to love their Honour's soundly based legal reasoning:

What about bad attitudes?
Do you think we could get a ruling on the middle aged bad tempered things that grace QF international flights who told me the light above my head was for emergencies only?
You see 2 of them at the back of the plane most of the flight talking rubbish while the 3 or 4 junior staff slave thier guts out with no help at all. Why don't they just go gracefully instead of making everyones life miserable. Pax and staff.

basement,
Tech crew are subject to yearly medicals.
Any overweight tech crew are behind the eight ball when it comes to a stress ecg due to their poor body mass index (bmi). So they could be weeded out i.e. not keep their licence. Flight attendants are not subject to the same stringent annual medical testing.

Why else would a cabin crew care about you reading?
and as for standing around the back while others worked Yeah right!
Did you happen to walk down to the back and listen to hear what they were talking about?
Nope, this sounds more like a gripe about a knock back or not getting an upgrade to me.

From the impression ive got from my dealings with indians, they much prefer a heftier girl. shows wealth or some such. maybe this is all about safety concerns, im sure there are sizes that dont fit an emergency exit.
Right, so if the female cabin crew aren't thin enough to induce a fat between the legs of the male passengers, they're considered unsuitable.
So what about all the slim beauties that smoke cigarettes...
"It is universally accepted that smokers have tendency to suffer from diseases," the judges said.
Perhaps they should be moved to an office job too.

its true about the middle east- if you have acne they can put you on cosmetic leave and if you have cold sores they can also put you on cosmetic leave. Weight is also a big issue- you can get reported if your uniform is too tight and you have to report to the grooming officer who weighs you and tells you to loose weight within a certain amount of time. Appearance is very important in the middle-east- well the airline I worked for anyway!
