Talking No Smoking flight - what is the problem!

Do other airlines have problems with no-smoking flights or is this a developing country problem.

Comments like "I will die if I do not have a cigarette" - continuous smoking in toilets - smoke detectors crap when covered and attempts to set cushion of seat on fire while evading detection.

Particularly annoying for smoking crew members who do not have a problem but get well wound up by these people.

Your comments!

This is a common problem the world over. I work for a UK airline on domestic routes and still pax feel the need to go to the loo for a quick ciggi. (Thats a 1 hour flight)
As for the smoke detectors you could stand underneath it with a lit ciggi and it still wouldn't go off, they are not designed to pick up ciggi smoke!!

Just put back smoking flights on long-hauls!,
or at least smoking corners like Air France.
In the States, even some airports are fully non smoking. None sense.

Being flight deck I don't often look through the cabin crew section. This is a subject which has often been discussed so if you'll pardon my intruding I would like to add the following.

I work for an airline which has mostly (nearly all) smoking flights. I find this extremely unfair to all our non smoking passengers. Realisticly, there is no such thing as a non-smoking seat on an aircraft because the air is constantly being circulated. Anyone who has worked a smoking, and a non-smoking flight (especially long haul) will know that one smoker in a room of non-smokers is affected by no-one, but should that one person light a cigarette, he/she affects everyone.

I realise that nicotine is addictive and on long haul non-smoking flights this could be a problem, even a safety hazard. How many pax smoke in toilets etc? Why sould non-smoking pax be subjected to second hand smoke? Pasive smoking blah, blah, blah....
Unfortunately it just doesn't make economic sense to "seal" a section of aircraft off for those that smoke, the extra weight, maintenance and logistics involved would only lead to the increase of airfares and once again it would be the non-smoker who would be scr#wed.

What should be done? I don't have a solution to the problem, but the world market seem to be moving towards smoke free flights. I agree.

I face this problem from the other side, I smoke and can't stand being on a long flight without a ciggarette. How about airlines giving out free nicotine gum to passangers, I usually take some, but have been known to forget, makes for a tense flight.

There are clearly 2 sides to this topic. In the interst of safety and public health, I believe smoking should not be permitted on flight, long or short. I rearly get this problem on board my long haul flights. Most smokers should be responsible to carry their own form of smoking relief products - why should the airline provide it? The majority of smokers approach this from a fair and understanding angle which is admirable, as it is an addiction. The general public should be considered first. There are also children on board who's parents do not want to expose them to harmful smoke. As the Captain above said, there is not such thing as a non-smoking section on an a/c. Watch the movie 'The Insider' and see for yourself how evil the tabacco giants are.

Have pax smoking on loos about every other flight and it scares the beejeezus out of me.
Still, problem was just as bad when we all still could smoke legally on board; pax standing around half drunk loosing their ciggy and having it roll under a door slide, pax falling asleep with a burning fag setting fire to the flame-retardent seat cushion

WARLOCK2000
Why not give them a 'safe sealed smoking section' which THEY pay for? ($200 extra 2 smoke: profit and happiness and SAFER and CHEAPER fares for everyone else)
Why do we always HAVE to try and stand in the way of people who don't live like us?
"Everyone's so negative .... mhaannn"
Problems are oppertunities ... STRANGE habit though!

SOLUTION ?

stick them in the cargo hold..
ahh, that doesn't work, smoke detectors down there too !!!
Just shoot them then, if they insist on smoking !!!

Tolerance is a virtue, punishment is fun though !!
