Being flight deck I don't often look through the cabin crew section. This is a subject which has often been discussed so if you'll pardon my intruding I would like to add the following.
I work for an airline which has mostly (nearly all) smoking flights. I find this extremely unfair to all our non smoking passengers. Realisticly, there is no such thing as a non-smoking seat on an aircraft because the air is constantly being circulated. Anyone who has worked a smoking, and a non-smoking flight (especially long haul) will know that one smoker in a room of non-smokers is affected by no-one, but should that one person light a cigarette, he/she affects everyone.
I realise that nicotine is addictive and on long haul non-smoking flights this could be a problem, even a safety hazard. How many pax smoke in toilets etc? Why sould non-smoking pax be subjected to second hand smoke? Pasive smoking blah, blah, blah....
Unfortunately it just doesn't make economic sense to "seal" a section of aircraft off for those that smoke, the extra weight, maintenance and logistics involved would only lead to the increase of airfares and once again it would be the non-smoker who would be scr#wed.
What should be done? I don't have a solution to the problem, but the world market seem to be moving towards smoke free flights. I agree.
