Qantas used to have one crew member arm the door and then cross over to check the other door. Now the crew member arms the door and there is no crosscheck. It's all part of "taking ownership" and Being responsible or some such thing...

Polar Bear,
I object to your racist comment
While I may not agree with this pratice, it has nothing to do with the nationality of any of the crew that work for this company.
A Large number of the 'major' airlines, the world over come to Ireland each year to recuit cabin crew. They do this not just because the girls are good-looking, but because, in general, Irish people are professional and dedicated in their chosen profession.
Irish crew are recognised as amongst the best in the world, just ask the 'major' carriers.

Perhaps because they are Irish?...

Objection sustained Compton!
Believe me, I have nothing against the Irish, nor their country for that matter. But the Irish ones I know have a splendid sense of humor, even my jokes seem to amuse them from time to time...
Anyhow, my appologies if I offended someone!

Hey guys and gals .... regarding the original question (you seem to have digressed a bit!) here is the answer according to our practices at BA. The old manner was that the person in charge of a door (ie sat next to it) would engage the door into manual or automatic and then the person opposite (or nearest if opposite is NA) would double check the status of the door before reporting this to the CSD, FD, CS (whatever you guys call your Big Cheese! ) BUT things have been changed mostly because of the incidents we were having on our 767 when the doors to manual was called and people werent selecting manual properly and instead pulling the handle to open the doors and bang crash whallop we have a public demonstration of "How an inflatable slide opens!" The new method is hoped to change this. When the first person goes to select their door into manual/automatic the other person stands next to them AS they do and NOT after so that they can double check that they are pulling the correct handles and then the same is done on the other side. It might appear that one person is taking care of things but in actual fact it's two. So far so good but as they say watch this space. Any clarification needed let me know. "May the night-stops be long and the allowances ever-flowing!"

Uuuhhh nope i think maybe you misunderstood what I posted. One person actions and the other looks on WHILE (as opposed to AFTER) the arming/disarming is done and then the vice-verse is done on the other side of the aircraft. Like I said this was brought about to halt the inadvertant blowing of slides because if cross-checking is done after instead of while then its a bit late to make a correction. Still confused let me know!! "May the night-stops be long and the allowances ever-flowing!!"
