I would not categorize the information sent out by the faaa over the LHR base as the most intensive media campaign ever. We were never going to stop the LHR base as the company told everyone that QF was happy for Australian based crew to apply. The faaa never attempted to say that the pay on the LHR base was the equivalent of working in Sydney on a 50% pay cut, so none cared.

If we had an ad like the ACTU one where a flight attendant tells us that if he/she does not accept longer hours and a drop in conditions, they would be replaced with foreign workers it would hit the mark. Any Australian watching that would be outraged and QF would be besieged with interviews because other Australians would fear being replaced under the new IR laws if they don’t accept whatever the boss say’s. Imagine a roadside ad right opposite the main jet base entrance where everyone going to and from the international terminal would see it.

I suggested a media campaign to AM in the office and he laughed at me .He told me that I had no idea of how the world worked!!!The government and the ACTU believe that Ads work as does the rest of the world but the faaa knows better than everyone else.

Making a stand is not going to lead to our demise, that is a Chicken Little scenario scaring everyone into doing nothing. It is not that some crew are incapable of change but that some in the faaa believe that complete surrender is the only way forward.

We have a perfect chance with the “this is your life” last night.Dick Smith said one of the things he enjoys is that when you get on as QF flight any where in the world ,you feel at home .How about an ad where there is not one Australian crew member on board. In other words put the spotlight back on QF and make them react to us instead of the other way around.

The latest debacles include losing the cns/nrt and the company selling our crew rest seats. If this was the tech crew ,they would walk out and what do we do..nothing...How can you justify to a court that you expect crew not to have a rest for more than 5 hours and eat standing up when everyone else in the work place does the opposite

If the faaa believes that not giving the membership the right to know what is happening and not giving the chance to vote as is required under the constitution for a change of the EBA is the way forward, we are doomed

FAAA NEWSLETTER

2 December 2005
Attention all Qantas Long Haul Flight Attendants

NEW YORK SHUTTLE DISPENSATION
VOTE YES

On 22 September 2005 the FAAA wrote to you advising that the dispensation for the shuttle between LAX-JFK-LAX was going to be continued until a final decision was made by a postal ballot of members. We are now forwarding the ballot paper to you to vote on this issue, in line with our commitment that members will decide this matter.

The primary reason for the dispensation as advised to you on 23 March 2005 was “to provide job security for our members. The transfer of our flying to overseas based crew is not in the strategic interests of our membership or the long term viability of the Long Haul Division.”

It is a credit to our members that the overwhelming majority understand the importance of protecting our flying and hence our job security in the very difficult situation that confronts the Long Haul Division. This understanding is reflected by the fact that the FAAA has had very minimal negative feedback from the broader membership about the dispensation. In fact, it is heartening that whilst not necessarily liking the dispensation, most members understand that it is about protecting their jobs and have been supportive of the FAAA’s stance on this issue.

The Perth Long Haul Base closure should highlight in a very concrete manner the danger to job security that exists in this Division. The personal trauma and stress experienced by our members in Perth because of the base closure cannot be overstated. The example of Perth CANNOT be allowed to be repeated and develop into an imminent and broader threat to our wider membership. This means we have to be practical and we must take all reasonable measures to protect our flying and our job security. IT IS NOT ABOUT “ROLLING OVER” BUT IT IS ABOUT BEING PRACTICAL AND SENSIBLE.

The introduction of the Federal Government’s menacing Industrial Relations laws also requires a very considered and deliberate strategy to protect our flying and hence our job security.

I and other senior officials of the FAAA do not have the luxury to gamble with your future,
NOR WILL WE. We will not be diverted from taking tough decisions or even recommending unpopular measures if it is necessary to ensure no person from this Division loses their job. That is our primary obligation to you and we intend to fulfill that obligation, even in the face of elements of the membership who are only too happy to advise a NO vote on the dispensation and who would then run for cover if Qantas decides that Long Haul crew are totally inflexible and compulsory redundancies are initiated and members lose their jobs against their will.

Members who attended the recent FAAA membership meetings throughout the country will be aware that the over-riding theme at those meetings was JOB SECURITY.

We remind members of the following facts about the JFK dispensation:

- The JFK patterns are being actively bid for by our crew.
- On the very few occasions that the shuttle has gone beyond 17 hours, crew have voted to extend their tour of duty.
- The actual average tour of duty for this sector (based on last winter) is 14’59” only 59 minutes beyond what the Company could have automatically planned for.
- The FAAA has received a fatigue report on the JFK shuttle from a leading Australian expert on fatigue. The conclusion of this report does not support the withdrawal of the dispensation based on fatigue grounds.
- Withdrawal of the dispensation will result in AKL overseas based crew doing the shuttle. This will mean substantial displacement of our crew from LAX patterns.
- There are implications for new generation aircraft that may be ordered by Qantas. If we refuse to be flexible, then Qantas may decide that international flying on these new aircraft should not be allocated to Long Haul crew.

Qantas now has at its disposal other Qantas Group cabin crew who can do International flying that in years gone by was solely done by Long Haul. These other cabin crew employees are often more cost effective to utilise. Just yesterday Qantas announced that it will withdraw from Cairns- Narita and that this flying would be transferred to Australian Airlines. It is also widely expected that Qantas will shortly announce the creation of Jetstar International which has a huge potential to threaten our traditional flying.

We must therefore be prepared to deal with these realities without necessarily liking this situation. Not to do so will provide an incentive for more of “our traditional” flying to be transferred to others. If further international flying is transferred from the Long Haul Division, then job security of our cabin crew will be threatened.

We have a surplus of crew situation in Long Haul, we have other Qantas Group cabin crew who stand ready to do our traditional flying, we have a hostile Industrial Relations environment and we have Qantas critically examining what it sees as a “very costly” International Division.

In this environment it is essential to be flexible and to use every opportunity to protect our flying and our jobs. The FAAA position is therefore clear and unambiguous. We are strongly advocating a continuation of the dispensation in order that YOUR job security is maintained.

I ask you to accept our strong recommendation to you to vote YES to the New York Shuttle dispensation. Do not allow misguided and ill-informed comment to influence you to vote no. I cannot stress too strongly, a NO vote WILL have very adverse implications for your job security.

We believe our membership is sensible and pragmatic. We don’t believe that our members will reject the dispensation and provide further incentive for Qantas to marginalise the Long Haul Division. The prime objective of the FAAA is to protect our employment. We intend to do that in a very difficult environment that confronts us, with your continuing support.

VOTE YES AND PROTECT YOUR JOB!

Written and authorised by Michael Mijatov – Secretary – International Division on behalf of the Divisional Executive – International Division.

transmission of business

"transmission of business" - (the moving of Qantas staff from L/H to Jetstar International while stripping them of all their existing entitlements )
don't you just love corporate speak? so clinical, so impersonal, so INHUMANE !
Welcome to the Brave New World -its spinning so fast , union wise, we will only ever be in a catch- up position.
this is truly getting frightening (have a look at the article in today's SMH 3/12.......can someone post it / cut & paste ...not my strong point....

RIP L/H - LEST WE FORGET.....

The stripping of conditions of Australian workers and the transfer of wealth that is going to occur AUSTRALIA WIDE begs the following question.

How many DECADES does the Federal Liberal party expect to be in the political wilderness....?

In regard to crew rest seats, when I was on the ramp we were entitled to our meal break between the 3rd and 5th hour. When it got to 4hr40m we would walk off for our 20 mins. It sounds petty but the main reason for this is there is not many ways you can do anything to stand up for yourself to management, but this is one way to give them a headache.

Thumbs down THIS IS YOUR ............TRIPE!!!!!!!!!!

Just viewed ( tape) of the much advertised "special" presentation.

What a load of Horse ****e!!!!!!

It should of begun with a disclaimer....."paid advertisement by QF ".

Nancy Bird..........what the hell was she on ???? She was wound up as tight as a drum. Banging on about foreign influence - HELLO NANCY HAVE YOU BEEN ON A QF001 LATELY???????

Dick Smith...........I can still remember him slagging off on QF big time a few years back . This is after QF sponsored his "epic" Helicopter adventure.
GET BACK IN YOUR HOLE DICK WIT. !!!

Peter Cosgrove............on the board.
SAY NO MORE.

Singo................my mate Geoff ...blah blah blah.

John Travolta............."I rang up Geoff to be an Ambassador for Qantas"......yeah right you expect the masses to believe that. Come off it John. Who is paying for your fuel, your 707 maintanance, your F/O endorsement -simulator training etc etc etc??
Then to go on about HUMANITY. I think John and Nancy must have been chewing on the same beetle nut.!!!!

on & on & on. I eventually gave up after seeing Morrisey parade some harlets in old Uniforms ( bring back the Puci )......
WHERE WERE THE BLOKES ?????????

Any way, the program has been taped over with an episode of Home and Away-much better viewing (sic! )

......................and yes I have just read the Herald article.

Brace yourselves for impact boyz and girls..............'cause this week there will be some HUGE QF CORPORATE ANNOUNCEMENTS.

me thinks the end is nigh.

Angry

Dear syd sh haul,( In response to many of your posts)
Or should I call you 'ALL HAUL'!!!!! cause you want it all!

I dont whinge much at all, I work hard , I love my job and I also have to relocate states, not because you personally are to blame, but your union of which you are part chose to undercut and undermine my conditions.
Those perth csm's who are allowed(not over the moon about it believe me) to transfer for family's sake whole heartedly deserve it.
Qf have spent bucketloads overnighting extra s haulers to cover our flying and now have syd l haul crew doing the NRT's.
There are no savings. It has been a bad experiment.

Back off sunshine...I have had a gutfull reading your posts. You have no idea of the stress that has been felt over here in the past year.
Back to packing...

Oh here we go with the "everyone's out to get us" line again.

The SH union is protecting its own members interests. Newsflash... This is the goal of the FAAA!! The SH FAAA aren't exactly going to knock back the opportunity to obtain more flying and more employment for its members now is it?

Just on a side note, the LH FAAA also represents AO so it matters not to them whether CNS-NRT belongs to QF or AO - as long as they are retaining members that's all they ultimately care about.

My crystal ball tells me that LH crew are going to become an endangered species threatened with extinction.

To quote Charles Darwin "It is not always the strongest who survive, nor the most intelligent, but those who adapt and change the most."

pm than sword,

when have i had a go at the per base?? Pull your head in buddy. I dont do "your" flying.... i didnt vote to do "your" flying so go and bark up some other tree.

It like when your at a party etc and someone asks you who you work for...then they launch into a line about last month they were on a qantas flight which ran late blah blah........ Yeah...that would be my fault! same same but different.

If you want to hold me accountable for the actions of other people than so be it.

Your base shut down...and yes..that sucks. BUT...dont blame the workers, blame the management.

syd girl,

You lot have not adapted rather you have just undercut us, the incumbents?

Did you do it in order to secure YOUR "survival"?
No.

Rather, you did it simply because you could.

The fact that you lot STILL can't come to grips with that says much of you.

Shlonghaul you are exactly right. This is the point I've been trying to make to the numbskulls who are wasting their energies attacking the wrong people!

speedbirdhouse if LH doesn't adapt soon they will lose more and more flying. This is why your FAAA are encouraging you to say Yes to the NY shuttle vote.. there is more to it than just that one issue. It is about your survival and the maintenance and creation of Aussie jobs.

The anger shown on here is misdirected. As soon as some people realise this then progress will be made.

Sydgirl…I don’t have anything against the short haul crew who did not vote for your EBA but I do have for the ones who whiteanted L/H by voting yes.

So looking at your Darwinian theory of evolution(I'm sure poor old Charles is spinning in his grave with numbskulls who are warping his theory), people in order to survive should stab everyone else in the back to keep their jobs . In other words ANARCHY… !!!!!

So to keep our flying we decide to undercut S/H………and then you do the same to us and so on etc etc..…before we know it, we are both paying to go to work….The only one to benefit is…. That’s right QF and of course Darth Dixon and his bonus.

Australian jobs will be kept but at what cost??? What’s next, we work 17 hours a day and the company charges us for crew meals or our uniforms or we have to share rooms!!!

I can see why you are one of the faaa’s sycophants…Vote yes and roll over just to keep our jobs that in a few years time will not be worth keeping.Or is going along with the appeasment disciples in the faaa merely to justify your morals and code of ethics.

There are alternatives to infighting but there will always be someone who will take the easy path and betray anyone who gets in their way..I'm sure we have all worked with someone like this ..They are unfortunately everywhere..

Qantas LH No Longer

I do not see Qantas as an Australian airline.

When Mr Dixon has all flight crew on LH based overseas (not Australians mind you) and SH flight crew on less than virgin blue pay, next will come the pilots, maintence all done overseas in some second/third world whole.

Now with J.Howards new I.R laws watch out. No such thing as mimimum wage, well yes there is it's $12.85-hummmmm ask someone to fly YSSY-KJFK for that an hour?? you watch.

how much is Mr Dixon on again??

Live to fight another day

I dont think what the FAAA leadership is doing can be called appeasment. I think if you are in a boxing match and you are hopelessly outmatched.... size, weight, reach, strenth as we are in long haul against Qantas ..then we have to be smart and not take them on head to head.

Given that now in that same boxing match the boxing rules are now in favour of your opponent (IR LAWS) and the refereee (AIRC) has been knobbled then if you want to go the ten rounds and collect your prize money you have to stay on your feet be fast and flexible.

For the ones out there that think that somehow its braver to go head to head and get mauled then i say good luck. You dont need the FAAA for that . Just go straight to Dixon and tell him what you think. Dont write on here lol be brave and take them on.

Dont know quite how you would do that without risking your home, your assets etc, coz any form of industrial action is illegal.

Under the new IR LAWs Qantas employees with probably never again be able to take industrial action.

So other than Industrial Action whats the Answer...????

I keep asking the brains trust in here whats the proposed alternative plan to the current FAAA officials but no one ever answers...

Its the same old crap about sell outs etc but realistically i want to hear the alternative plan not a lot of motherhood statements about standing up and saying no...

What does that actually entail....i want to see the plan before i am prepared to criticize our current officials
