live at EMA
hi there!
This might be off-topic, so please feel free to move this post, but i don't really know where to post it so...
I am thinking to move to EMA (ground-job) but I wonder how EMA and Notthingham is for someone foreign. I already heard some stories that this is an boring area to move to.
Is there a nightlife in there? Are there a lot of options to meet people? (I know it all depends on yourself...but you know what I mean, I heard it is quite an agricultural surrounding...)
Thanks!

whilst rather middle aged and living in a very rural part of the east midlands-and very nice too!-I understand from the young ones that the night life-especially in Nottingham-is very lively, it being a university city, certainly the shopping is very good and concerts etc, all they need is a decent footie team!

Hi
Well like almost proffessional i live very near to the airport, which is a lovely area and ideal for commuting to leics, notts and so on....
I personally prefer Derby that Notts, reason being Very easy to get to,and quicker straight down the new A50.
It has a fantastic night life, apparently most Notts people drink in Derby now, good shops, plus it is having a nice new Shopping Mall constructed with 300 new shops and lots of restuarants.
I also like Derby as you don't have the violence there compared to Nottingham, almost everytime i put the news on there is always a shooting or killing in Notts,Derby is very low in crime,so i stick with Derby. Take care

The music scene in Nottingham is very good. And the nightlife is great. City centre living is good in Nottingham too, with a fast direct coach to EMA from Nottingham Station every half hour. www.skylink.co.uk
Derby is also good, you'll maybe find city centre living is a bit cheaper too. It is closer to the airport, but the Public Transportation is not as frequent.
A perfect compromise is Long Eaton - a town halfway between the two cities. With its own rail station linking it to Derby, Nottingham , Leicester and London.
Pub transportation is good for Derby and Nottingham too. Airport well served with buses through Castle Donington.
Shopping - outside of London, I think Nottingham and Leeds have the best City Centre shopping in the country.
History - Derbyshire, Nottingham and Leicestershire are oozing with the stuff. Typical english countryside with villages, steeples, pubs, country houses, and if you take yourself up in to the Peak National Park in Derbyshire, only 45 mins from the airport, you are in some seriously pretty country!!!!
Come have a visit!
(Should I apply for a job with the East Midlands Tourist Board??

Having lived in the East Midlands for most of my adult life, I can tell you that Nottingham is way better than Derby. In fact Derby-ites are viewed as backwater cousins with knuckle dragging tendencies. The night life in Nottingham is good, the reports of violence are over played its no worse than any other 'big' city.
Having said all that I have recently moved to Breedon, which is in Derbyshire.

hmmmm
it frightens me a bit that everyone seems to mention violence...
To be honest my main concern was that this will be a really boring surrounding... guess I was wrong then! Because if I am really honest I am a kind off city girl, can't miss the shops and the clubs, and simply the vibration of a city.
Btw, how far/difficult is it to get to London for let's say a weekend (my cousin lives over there)...
So is it really that violent for a girl on her own. Btw, are there lots of people (eg crew) coming over there to live, in other words, are there lots of oppurtunities to meet a new crowd?
Thanks, thanks and thanks again (you guys are making this though decision easier)

Gege,
All joking aside, please don't be put off by this talk of violence. We're not talking about downtown Baghdad here. Neither Derby or Nottingham are any worse than any other metropolitan area, and certainly more safe than London (last Thursdays atrocities aside) where your Cousin lives. Every city has 'bad' areas where you would avoid going.
Nottingham is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with a wide and varied nightlife. With a young population, due to the two Universities and numerous colleges. I've lived in the area for over 30 years, I've moved out of the area and then come back again if that's any indication. I'm not a native, but I choose to live in this region. The cost of living is reasonable in comparison with the S.E. of England for example, and the people are friendlier.
It is centrally placed so you can get to anywhere in the country reasonably quickly, London will take an 1½ hours on the train and two hours by car.
Hope that helps

It's also worth pointing out that 90% of violent crime in Nottingham occurs within a couple of square miles. If you go somewhere like West Bridgeford it's as safe as houses.
Leicester is also a great city but as it's my home town I'm biased!

I've lived in Nottingham all my life. Apart from Notts being called "the gun capital of Britain", I think it's pretty good. If you're coming here to live, stay out of places like Radford and St Anns and you'll be fine.

Nottingham is definitely the place to be but there again I am a little biased since I am a native of the city!
Stacks of good shops, a theatre and a playhouse, lots of good eating and drinking establishments and the casinos are good if you like to gamble!
The night life is fantastic and as a regular partcipant I have get to see any of the violence which the media seem so keen on highlighting - steer clear of the hotspots of St Annes and Radford and you will be ok.
Nottm also sports a tram system up to Hucknall now and there are other routes planned. There is more and more apartment accomodation being built within walking distance of the city centre.
We have also got Robin Hood! Enjoy!

Go for Nottingham. You won't regret it. I was out and about there the other day and it wipes the floor with Derby!
London would only be a couple of hours on the train and so weekends down there are easily do-able.
Have fun!
