The music scene in Nottingham is very good. And the nightlife is great. City centre living is good in Nottingham too, with a fast direct coach to EMA from Nottingham Station every half hour.

Derby is also good, you'll maybe find city centre living is a bit cheaper too. It is closer to the airport, but the Public Transportation is not as frequent.
A perfect compromise is Long Eaton - a town halfway between the two cities. With its own rail station linking it to Derby, Nottingham , Leicester and London.
Pub transportation is good for Derby and Nottingham too. Airport well served with buses through Castle Donington.
Shopping - outside of London, I think Nottingham and Leeds have the best City Centre shopping in the country.
History - Derbyshire, Nottingham and Leicestershire are oozing with the stuff. Typical english countryside with villages, steeples, pubs, country houses, and if you take yourself up in to the Peak National Park in Derbyshire, only 45 mins from the airport, you are in some seriously pretty country!!!!
Come have a visit!
(Should I apply for a job with the East Midlands Tourist Board??
