Calming Nerves @ an Interview!

Hi all!!

I have an interview for Cabin Crew coming up (yay!), and I was hoping to see if anyone has some tips on how to calm nerves for an interview!?

Are there any special vitamins or something maybe??

Thanks!

Scotty

I once had a colleague who had failed an interview simply through nerves - she whistled through the "mock" interviews we organised but then couldn't hack it on the day. Everyone knew she was capable and everyone wanted her to get through. In desperation our boss said "For Lord's sake have a shot of brandy before you go in". She passed!

Very best of luck and hope it pans out OK for you..

Just an observation, but if you can't hack an interview without chemical assistance, how will you cope with a full-blown emergency at 33,000 ft?
Just interested - as a customer.

OzDJCabinCrew,

I tend to take interviews in my stride, but there was this one occasion where any nerves I had repressed in the past came out all at once. I couldn't even remember the name of my then-current employer. Needless to say i didn't get a job out of that interview, but went onto to blitz my next interview for my current airline.

I think what got me through was just thinking like I already had the job and the interview was purely a formality. Cool as a cucumber.

best of luck

Hey OzDJ,

Congrats on getting an interview.

When I went for my driving test, I was soooo nervous. My own worst enemy, constantly worrying about everything, and working myself up and making myself nervous. I was fine with the actual driving, I just couldn't hack the thought of being 'rejected' (failing the test) and because I was in the frame of mind, I made my fear come true. So, the next time around, I had talked it over with my friend. She would ask me "if such and such happens, what will you do?" We asked the testing centre where were the likely places I would have to go, and we drove those routes till I knew them really well.

My point? If you are prepared and have gone through all the possible scenarios in your head, you'll feel less nervous because you have already faced that particular 'fear'.

Sorry if I sound preachy but it really worked for me - I passed no worries, it was all my frame of mind. I just thought "I will pass, I will pass", not blindly but because I was prepared for what might happen.

Also, a naturopath friend of mine told me about "Rescue Remedy" - a natural mix of Bach flower remedy that you put a couple drops under the tongue before a stressful situation. It helped calm me down and I was able to concentrate on what I was doing and didn't feel half so nervous.

Best of luck!

Sky

PS - two weeks ago I went for a job interview (not for airline but an airline-style group interview) I did really well because of what everyone else has posted on Pprune about interviews - I knew exactly what to expect and felt so confident about the situation, whereas other girls, on getting out of the lift and seeing thrity people, just about died. So, mentally preparing yourself really helps!!!!

Good question but rather simple to answer.....

It comes from an intense desire to prove they could indeed cope with a real emergency. The nerves come from them hoping to god that this will shine through at interview. With advance warning it's very easy to work oneself up but real life emergencies by their very nature are immediate affairs and you don't get time to become nervous.

I know guys who comes across as nervous characters on the ground...... put them in an intense situation upstairs and they're a different person entirely.

Hope that clears it up for you.

VFE.

I've sat both sides of an interview desk in another industry. Not sure which is worse sometimes!

Remember they need you as much as you need them.

Prepare good questions to ask the interviewer. It doesn't matter if you already know the answer as long as it isn't obvious you already know.

Search the web for some recent company news and raise it in the interview... "I heard you were expanding into ABC? Does this mean XYZ". Shows interest.

Be ready for the question... "Why do you want to work for xyz?"

You could try asking the interviewer why they work for xyz! I once asked an interviewer this and the answer was so negative that I turned down their job offer.

The worst candidates are those that sit there and don't say anything. Avoid yes/no answers if possible.

CC Interviews

OZDJCABINCREW,
Congratulations on getting an interview . I notice you are also from BNE as am I. Just wondering which interview you have. I have two, one for Jetstar and one for Virgin Blue.
Either or would be fantastic - if it is Virgin I know there's nothing to be nervous about and the best advise is of course to just be yourself and stay calm and relaxed. As osmebody else said, they need you just as much as we need them. And if you really want it and you've got as far as the interview there shouldn't be any reason you don't get it. Smile, tell the truth and be yourself.
I might see you there even!
