Was just reading on another website, that Virgin Atlantic cabin crew can be based anywhere in the UK and then commute by air to LGW or LHR for their rostered flights?
Is this true?

Your information is correct (to a point). I worked with a couple of girls at KLC based in NCL, they both previously worked for Virgin. They had to stay in the London area for their first year-6months of their contract but after that they were allowed to move back to NCL and commute for there Check-ins.
I believe a fair few companies based at LHR/LGW allow their staff to do this.
