Is there anyone really worth flying for?
Hi all, I was wondering if any airline is really worth flying for now. I have been doing it for a few years now, and after a break am looking to return, but after looking at whats out there, I cannot get excited.
I am not commited enough to apply to BA, you go away a lot I hear, and the money is really only OK on euro fleet now, not great.
Do not want to be up at stupid check in times every weekend of my life.
Just want an airline that takes you away now and again, pays ok, and thinks it crew are still worth being proud of, and retaining.
Am I dreaming, or has the industry really gone to pot?

do you want to go for L/H then???
i have just started at BA and they are good to work for.. you can bid for your trips so therefore try and avoid nightstops and early starts if you dont want them.... they have a 60% success rate...not sure how accurate this is as as i say have just started..
if you dont want to be away alot then virgin do 3 day trips i think, sometimes a little bit longer but not much more than that...
as for the other stuff you mention, i think you will find that this industry has changed alot...
whatever you decide, good luck

Personally I would say JAL, EMIRATES OR GULFAIR, here in the UK, a lot of airlines are terrible, the pay is only just better than tesco, Well at Astraeus it was anyway, by the way they are recruiting and next to a £ sign they write excellent (WHAT A JOKE).. Astraeus - £Excellent. please don't give people misleading information.
Astraeus pay =
I would say BA all the way.

Dogma,
Is there any need for you to be so rude? Nah don't think so.
Most people I have spoken to who work in the middle east love it, its an experience, and the money with Emirates is good. I have heard Qatar is not very good from several people.
If they were so bad why so many people still trying to work for these airlines? One more think Emirates or Ryan air? Emirates or BMI? Emirates or Astraeus, the list is endless, personally BA or nothing in this country.
Cabin crew in UK is underpaid and undervalued job.. Its getting worse too

That is so true GEB,
They offer these brand new excited crew £10,000 PA, and only offer them a 6 month contract.
So in fact all they will actually be paid is around £5,000 basic.
The UK airline industry is definitely getting worse.

I'm with Dogma...I have no idea why people are so keen to work for middle eastern airlines where so much credence is given to age and looks. Not to mention that you have the dubious thrill of living in a compound? Hooray. Plus, the entire UAE is censored...I for one enjoy my civil liberty of freedom of speech. I don't need someone telling me what I can/cannot view on TV, the internet, or in books.
Why do people continue extolling the virtues of EK? I'd say it's wanderlust...they're young, naive and probably a little behind the times when it comes to weighing up the pros and cons of a place. It's the: Oh, I've just gotta fly!...brigade.

I think the main attraction to those thinking of applying to Emirates is the 'abroad'/get away from home factor. New planes, tax-free salary, sunshine, loadsa routes, loads of nightstops, smart uniform and reputation.
Most people I've spoken to (including Emirates staff) do it for maybe 2-3 years for the money and the experience of life somewhere else. I certainly wouldn't turn down a job offer from them. I don't want to work as CC forever, neither do I think the job is all-glamorous (definitely not at a LCC!
) but 2-3 years at Emirates or similar sounds like an interesting experience to be savoured....
Sure, compounds/living with crew have their down-sides but I'd do it for a while at least....Dubai is a bit of a fantasy place I know, but it's still fun for a while...
