Why the stereotype for FA's

Why (and what caused) is there this stereotype that FA's are easy red hot rampant sex machines on legs? (and equally the same stereotypes for male FAs)? It came up in a discussion recently and I could not think WHERE it originated from. Apparently there are even "fake" p0rnulike picture sets of FA's in FA gear.

OK, the "gal/guy" inside the uniform can be a hottie, can have the same drive and urge as the rest of us, but what is it that is the "FA" rather than the person behind it.

I appreciate that other things float the boat for many folks just as school girls, fire men, cheerleaders (particularly in the U.S. for some reason). Does this really cause any unwarranted harassment for FA's doing their job, other than the same looks that they might get whether they were a nun or just a fellow passenger.

Any cited reports to further quensh this post Christmas pondering welcomed.

The media are partly to blame.

articles in magazines don't help-Cosmo did one ages ago on how cabin crew are all 'hedonistic and sex mad' and how we all drink and buy drugs on layovers, have lots of sex, blah blah blah blah. Complete rubbish.

The Sun (that classy newspaper ) also did an article.

The tv series Mile High.

I think one's attitude determines the one pax will have towards you. Present yourself as a serious professional and no one will dare bothering you. I never let anyone get inside my professional shield, which doesn't mean not smiling and being nice to pax.

Perhaps it's because of posts like "Photos" on this very same forum.

I always thought it was because of the service innuendo. You know your own personal slave that's gorgeous and in uniform. I agree with flyblue it's how you portray yourself as to whether the stigma sticks. And over the years I have met other crew just like that but certainly not the majority.

Same garbage as "all male crew are gay ". It's usually carried on by people who aren't in the industry or think they know people who are. I think they all need to get a life.

Thanks. It was very interesting reading all the responses. Of course, there are many female FAs who I have met who could feature in some very torrid fantasies ("if they would only ask !") grin but that is based on the personality they gave off rather than wearing some piece of corporatewear and a scuffed lifejacket during the demos. I have thought a bit more about this and wonder if it was an extension of the pilot figure in those romantic novels my grandmother seemed to always have around when I was younger. Rgds ! Luoto.

Do the general public really think that we are easy red hot rampant sex machines on legs?
I do not consider myself like this at all, and I have never thought that is what passengers think of me (us).

I remember a certain "Teenage Dirtbag Baby" portion of a car advert which mysteriously vanished.

Different view

Funnily none of my mates think that flight attendants are rampant sex machines (especially the ones that fly AA a lot! heheh)...

But, the prejudice I found existed (I didn't know about this until 12 months ago or so) was to do more with perceived intelligence ..... A few people (male and female) were gobsmacked when I said I'd made the QF shortlist and why I wanted a job that didn't have any mental stimulation! Why would you want to be a flying waiter etc. I found the level of ignorance of the role of the flight attendant to be extraordinarily widespread. Needless to say, I don't have a lot to do with those bigots anymore (mostly lawyers), but it got me thinking to ask about to see what other people thought....

The general consensus seems to be:

* It seems to be highly sought after job - so therefore very competitive and those who get jobs in cabin crew have to be quite talented.

* A lot don't think they would be able to do it - long hours, time zones, screaming babies, screaming drunks etc

But the main theme seemed to be admiration for flight attendants that even after a 12 -14 hour flight could still give a genuine smile at pax on the way out.

I tend to think the "stereotype" seems to represent whatever the respondent thinks about themselves in that position to be honest (if that makes sense). At the end of the day though, I'd much rather have a flight attendant at my dinner table than a crusty old law partner!
