Who Can Upgrade?
Just wanted to know out of a matter of interest,we pax alot with Emirates to a host of destinations and sometimes are booked on business class and other times on economy class depending on the mood of our office ladies, however on more than one ocasion even on an economy class ticket we've arrived on board to find our seat allocations being in business class,or being asked after we've sat down in economy class whether we wouldn't prefer to sit in a vacant business class seat.Obviously this is not a complaint at all, just curious how it works and who has the authority to make these decisions.Another quick note,Emirates must have by far the most friendly and appealing cabin crew out of any airline we use!

Exactly that, they are more friendly than any of the other airlines we use,I have no idea why they are like that, but it is always nice to know that when we fly with them the service is always impecable and done without a fake smile. Before this thread goes the way I think it will, please would somebody shed some light on my question,I would really appreciate it.

Most of the airline crews that position with us..mainly UK and Canadian charter airlines, are generally in Club, as a matter of course. I know that at least 1 major UK charter airline pays for its crew to travel club, as they naturally have to be somewhere on a deadline (i.e to operate a flight), and club pax would normally be top priority if anything went wrong with the flight i.e weather delays etc...they would be the ones to be transferred onto other flights/carriers first.
Generally speaking though, its is the ground staff's decision whether to upgrade, and that is based on overbooking of traveller..and its is generally the executive card holders that would be given priority, followed by ticket holders who have paid the most..which I guess makes sense.
Hope that helps.

I'm a travel agent at the moment and do a lot of business with Emirates. Emirates have an un-written company policy to look after frequent passengers particularly well - whether they hold a Skywards card or not. I would assume that when your travel gals book you on to EK, a note is sent to their Emirates rep asking for the upgrade. AS you book club now and again, and use the airline frequently, it's in their own interest to sit you in an empty club seat.
Keeps you going back, right?!!?
Usually, a Y-J upgrade wouldn't be made available but now and again, this does happen.
What confuses me though is that it's the crew members who move you. If the ground crew upgrades you, you will be issued a new boarding pass with the new seat number on it, as you pass through the gate. It sounds to me that perhaps the decision is left up to the crew, in this instance.
If you book a Business Class ticket though, make sure you tell your travel gals to speak to their rep about possibly upgrading to FIRST, as this is quite a regular thing with EK. Book Club, travel First.
If you can get this on their new A340-500, you'll be laughing!!!!

The upgrade issue is very precarious
If you get upgraded by ground staff it's usually due to oversales in economy cabins (or very kind staff)
If you get upgraded by the crew on board it's usually an observant senior crew member who's spotted crew on the pax list
(make a note of their names and be sure to return the favour.)
There always used to be an unwritten law that crew upgraded staff whatever ticket they were on (provided they were dressed appropriately of course)
Can we bring that back please, I know I've always done my best to do this.
(Crew really don't mind if there's not enough catering, but the chance for a good night's sleep is priceless.)
