I need advice.

Last week I received an email from MAM saying they would contact my references.

I got a phone call this morning from them asking for a reference from my current airline.

I explained I did not give a reference as the base manager who managed me has left the company and I never met the current base manager. I asked if it would be OK if I could provide the details of a Cabin manager who I flew with often - she said no, she would not accept this.

She said I should search linked in OR facebook to try and find my old base manager and thats all I could do (which I find extremely unfair) I only spoke to my base manager 2 times the whole 12 months I was there and I doubt she would remember me as she managed so many crew and no longer being there she would not have access to my files to give the reference.

Anyone any advice on what I should do??

MAM are strange with references.

They called a colleague of mine first. 4 Days after my AD. then I didnt hear from them in 3 months. Then I get a call saying they need another reference, as my manager manager is not suitable as they work for the same company as my colleague.
I thought they just wanted any 2 refs. They said to me a supervisor is fine.
The problem was with me, I only had that manager from the one company, as i haqve been at the same place for donkeys years. She said they cant do that, and when I told her thats all i have, she said she will try call and see if its allowed.

Didnt hear for a week or two, then get a call saying im through to the medical/security. So must have been ok! Seems strange. Id just say thats all you have, as thats all i could do, as past managers have all left and dont know where in the world they are.

Turned down the offer with MAM as had anohter offer Full Time Mainline with VA.

Wish I could give my spot to someone else waiting!

Thanks Sydneysider...

I was upset as this women has pretty much made out like theres no other option that if I do not find my old base manager than she cannot process me to the next stage - I got the impression she is strictly HR and does not completely understand how an airline works and that a Cabin Manager I flew with frequently would know me much better than a Cabin Manager.

They do seem very funny with references and not at all flexible - I really do hope this does not mean the end of my application!

Ilovehawaii

Thanks so much for the information... Can't wait to start flying :) anywhere is good at the moment haha! Wanna just get the experience :) then maybe in a year or two try get in to international :)

Is it easy to get international from Perth? How long have u been with Qantas?

Sydneysider88 19th Mar 2012 06:43

You will be fine dont worry about the references too much, as like ive said, one of mine didnt meet their criteria (even though it was my current boss!) only because both my refs were for the same company - silly.

But i got through anyway so i would not stress!;)

Medical

Hi Everyone! I don't reply here that often, but I though I would today as I have moved along in the process. I had my medical and drug screening today and even though I have come down with a man cold, I seem to be all fit and healthy. I sent off a few things on Friday for security screening, and hopefully that wont take too long to come back. So I'm hoping to get a call soon advising of ground school dates, as I'm really wanting to plan a trip to Europe between my current job and starting with MAM! Good luck to the rest of you and hopefully my next update will be with a GS date!!!

Sorry to be a pain, but does anyone have any info about the flying and rosters out of Melbourne? Feel free to PM me :)

Will MAM knock you back if you are a smoker - would you "fail" the medical?

ilana182 20th Mar 2012 08:25

I doubt it, plenty of pilots and flighties smoke.

Perthboy87

From my experience as I am from Perth too once after medical it could take only about 2 weeks and they call u to tell u are successful and in my case they called me the Monday and they only offered me one groud school starting the Friday and I asked if there was another they said not sure when the next one is... So be prepared maybe quite rush...

Hi Everyone, I just finished my medical and security check and have been advised that I was unsuccesful. Have any of you heard of this happening before? I presumed that I was through my medical and security checks were fine. I am devestated.

monet1811 20th Mar 2012 23:21

Hi everyone!
I have been successful (finally) and beginning ground school on April 2. SO happy, I've waited so long for this!! I just thought I would post my timeline as i stalked this forum the whole time i was waiting for a call back, I had my assessment day in Brisbane on Jan 31, two days later was told my references were being checked and then five weeks later i was told I was successful. I had already done a medical & security clearance for jetstar so I got the golden call the next day after I had passed on that info. Hope this helps a couple of you playing the waiting game!!

Also if anyone else will be with me at ground school on april 2, feel free to contact me! so excited! [email protected] :ok:

cc_skyqueen 20th Mar 2012 23:54

to the above ^

Yes, it does seem to be the case with a many people! I am so sorry to hear!

I always assumed that once you did your medical it was only a matter of time sort of thing but with MAM apparently not. My previous airline actually sent me to do medicals AFTER my golden call.

I have just finished my reference checks with them and now I am waiting to hear whether I will be cut or sent for medical and in all honesty if I was asked to do the medical I would feel uneasy about it as they are not cheap!

May I ask how much you spent all up on Medical & Security?

It's a lot to ask considering they are only valid for 12 months and 50% of people at my assessment day were unemployed ex air australia crew pinching as many pennies as they can!

All the best for the future, keep applying to other airlines :)

cc_skyqueen 20th Mar 2012 23:56

monet - congratulations!

I WISH I could say I will see you at ground school but I am still playing that waiting game!

All the best :)

Sydneysider88 21st Mar 2012 00:24

Security is $172
Medical is $300-400, but around the $350 mark.

Although I never went, I had to turn their offer down.

Danfromaus 21st Mar 2012 00:32

$172.50 security, my medical was only $160:)

leilajas 21st Mar 2012 00:50

I don't know why they bothered to send me to the medical and security check if they knew that they were not going to send me through I would say it has cost me well in excess of $600.00 for medical, security check, vaccs, blood tests, and doctors appointments. It just seem's cruel.

Sydneysider88 21st Mar 2012 01:54

Was there anything medically wrong did they give you feedback as to why you did not get through?
Surely they have a reason?

leilajas 21st Mar 2012 02:21

No reason I was medically fit and passed according to my the Doctor.
I can not understand.

mae92 21st Mar 2012 03:26

Got my Golden Call today, three days after my medical and five weeks after my interveiw. I start training on the 11th of April! If anyone is starting then let me know!
