Air New Zealand- LHR Base

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if you could all help me out. I recieved a call yesterday out of the blue asking if I would like a telephone interview with Air New Zealand (applied last July)

When I applied last time LHR base was just doing the LHR- LAX trips- is this still the case or do they do some far east routes as well now (Thailand, Singapore)

What are the current pay and conditions like at Air New Zealand. I currently work for a charter airline and my take home pay vaires between £1200- £1500 depending on how my rosters are (there have been some issues with rostering though this season with many people only having 3 or 4 flights a month!!! all short haul)

As a company what are they like to work for?

Any help would be appreciated- thank you

:)

Location 24th Feb 2007 09:58

Routes

LAX (2 Night's)
HKG(2 Night's)

Aircraft used : 747-400's and 777's

Read the website and Good Luck !!

Money is split into 3 types for example :
Your training pay is £7500 per annum
and your probation pay is £8500 per annum and once you complete your probation your pay is 10500 . I might be out by £50 on each example but just to give you some idea . And you also get your allowances down route cash in hand $$ .

Hope this Helps :ok:

sebby 24th Feb 2007 10:25

Where is the training done, out of curiosity?

I believe some NZ LHR crew were recently in Auckland doing 777 conversion...

Location 24th Feb 2007 10:31

They use British Airways facilities at LHR .

warwicks 24th Feb 2007 11:20

Thanks Location it did help.

With the allowances do you know how much they are? And does anyone know the trip patterns at all?

I have read the website again and it seems like a good company to work for. Do they get benefits on a par with virgin/ BA etc..

Sorry to ask so many questions- i just keep thinking of more things that I cant find.

:)

I Just Want To Fly 24th Feb 2007 17:05

I just got an email from them three days ago saying they weren't recruiting, but they would keep my application on file.

Then, to my surprise, I got a phone call on Friday for a phon interview. i declined, as I have my wings ceremony on Tueday for Virgin.

Good luck to all, NZ is a fab airline, and the new b777 is stunning!

warwicks 24th Feb 2007 17:12

Well done on Virgin- I got a position with them but got permanent at my charter airline so I turned it down and have regretted it ever since!!

What info did you get about Air NZ when you were looking into them? :)

changes2007 24th Feb 2007 18:59

air NZ crew LHR, help!!

If anyone reading this is the above LHR based crew. Please can you give me a typical months rosta, just to get an idea of work away etc.
Much appreciated.:)

NZ boi 26th Feb 2007 03:11

Hey ..I work for Air New Zealand in auckland pacific crew ..They are a great company to workfor howeverthey ar equite conservative in there values still although they are making changes to there image...down here its great we get lots of support and I have been flying for just over a year and already in line for promotion ...so go for it LHR base to my understanding has double its numbers due to the new routes...

warwicks 26th Feb 2007 08:18

Hi NZ,

Do some of your crew in aukland get to come over to LHR to work out of london?

Also this is another ask for any LHR based Air NZ crew to possibly give out some information about rosters/ pay/ trips/ any ad hoc flights etc

Any replies would be great :) :)

Aliyyah 26th Feb 2007 11:50

Hello everybody,

I just received a phone call from a very nice lady from Air New Zealand! She scheduled a phone interview with me for tommorrow! Does anybody know what kind of questions they will ask? I am sooooooo excited!!!

Aliyyah

warwicks 26th Feb 2007 13:38

Hi,

My telephone interview is tomorrow as well. What time is yours? I have mine at 1.55pm and am really nervous as well!

Do you fly at the moment?

:)

Aliyyah 26th Feb 2007 14:15

Hi warwicks!
My telephone interview is also at 1:55 pm (in my country 2:55 pm), that`s strange, that we have it at the same time! She told me it will last around 15 to 20 minutes.
Yes, I am currently working as a flight attendant for a small German airline, but just short-haul flights. What about you?

warwicks 26th Feb 2007 14:24

I currently work for a charter airline in the UK and do long haul and short haul routes.

I am nervous about the phone interview but just going to go with the flow. There doesnt seem to be many people on here that work for them so if i am sucessful at the phone interview stage will ask them questions about pay/conditions etc :)

Aliyyah 26th Feb 2007 14:40

Will they let you know by e-mail if you passed the phone interview or not?

Aliyyah 27th Feb 2007 10:10

I just finished the telephone interview, they called me earlier than I expected, because they said a free spot just opened.
Wow, I can`t believe that I finished it, I hope it went well.

Here are some of the questions they asked me:
- Why would you like to work for Air NZ?
- Why do you want to leave your present employer?
- What do you know about New Zealand?
- What do you know about Air NZ?
- What are the responsibilities of your current job?
- Did you ever have an angry passenger on board? What did you do?
- Did you ever have a problem (of any kind) on board? Tell me about it?
- Did you ever have a situation where you helped out your colleague without her asking you?
- Tell me about a situation where you provided excellent service!
- Tell me about a situation where you provided poor service.

That`s pretty much it. The telephone interview lastet 20 minutes.
Good luck to all who still have to do it!

warwicks 27th Feb 2007 12:48

I have just finished my telephone interview and they called me earlier than they said they would.

The questions that Aliyyah has put on here are the questions that they asked me (thank you for posting them as they helped me immensely)

They are very friendly on the telephone but they dont seem to give too much away and I have been told that I will be contacted within the next few days to let me know if I am sucessful.

They are not recruiting many people so they have told me that competition is fierce.

good luck everyone

aliyyah- how did they leave things with you?

Aliyyah 27th Feb 2007 13:34

Hi warwicks,
great to hear that you also finished your phone interview. It is strange though that they also called you earlier, they called me about 3 hours earlier than planned! Maybe they do that with everybody to see how flexible you are?
The lady was nice to me too, but she didn`t really say that much to my answers. She didn`t let anything show. Once I finsihed giving her the answer, there was always this silence. I think she took some notes during this time, but to me it felt odd. So I really can`t say if I am successful or not. And also she didn`t let me ask any questions, I mean it`s not such a big deal, because if I passed the phone interview I can still ask questions at the Assessment Centre.
At the end she told me, that I will get an e-mail soon. She also said that there will be an Assessment around March 12.
We will see what happens...:hmm:

Aliyyah 1st Mar 2007 12:12

warwicks: have you got an e-mail from Air NZ yet? I haven`t, still waiting! :(

warwicks 1st Mar 2007 12:54

hello alliyah,

still no e mail :bored: guess we just have to wait- hopefully wont be too long

:-)

Aliyyah 2nd Mar 2007 13:52

Wow, I can`t believe it! I just got a call from Air New Zealand. The woman told me that I passed the phone interview and invited me to an Assessment Centre in London Heathrow! I scheduled it for March 14th at 1:15pm. They also had March 12th available, but I have to work that day. She told me that the Assessment will last a half day. I am so excited.

Warwicks, hope you also passed! Maybe I will see you in London soon! :ok:

MissApproach 2nd Mar 2007 16:29

I had the call today too!

My assessment is on the 12th at 13:15.

Good luck to everyone!!

warwicks 2nd Mar 2007 18:40

I don't think that I have been sucessful as I did not recieve a call.

Good luck to all those who did- Air NZ sounded like a fantastic company to work for!! :)

Aliyyah 4th Mar 2007 09:24

@ warwicks: I am so sorry that you didn`t receive a call! Don`t give up, there are a lot of other great companys to work for.

@ MissApproach: Congratulations that you got invited! Please let me know how the Assessment went.
Did you already receive your invitation by e-mail? I didn`t. Hope I will get it soon.
Do you think that I need a first aid certificate if I am already working as cabin crew?

MissApproach 4th Mar 2007 09:39

Yes sorry Warwicks, is there any chance you can re-apply to Virgin?

Aliyyah: Yes I will no worries! I have no idea what to expect  . Maybe I should have chosen the 14th!! :ugh:
I have not received the email yet either, I started to worry that I had given the wrong email address.
With regards to the First Aid Certificate, I am sure I read somewhere that you had to have one. But some Airlines are reluctant to give them to you when you leave. Can I ask who you are working for?

Aliyyah 4th Mar 2007 09:46

Yes, it`s a pitty that I won`t be able to meet you at the Assessment.
Maybe someone here can tell us something about the interview day? I am surprised that it will only last half a day. I thought it would last a whole day. But good for us! :) Especially good for me, because I don`t need to stay at a hotel. I will fly from Germany to London in the morning, attend the interview and in the evening fly back home.
Good luck for you too!

I am currently working for a small German Airline, based in Stuttgart!
So, I need to get an First Aid Certificate, probably better than to show up without it, right?

Aliyyah 5th Mar 2007 15:37

First Aid Certificate

At the Air NZ website it says:

First Aid
Prior to attending an Assessment Centre you need to hold a current First Aid Certificate (St. John's or Red Cross), obtained within the last six months. (First Aid Certificates are not required for registered nurses).

So, today I registered for a First Aid Course for Wednesday.
Although I am still not sure if I even need it, because I am already working as a flight attendant and we have a First Aid Course every year. And I also worked as a doctor`s assistant for 4 years.
But this way I am on the safe side, because I don`t want to show up for the interview with stuff missing! And it also can`t hurt to do the First Aid training again. :)

qantaswannabie! 5th Mar 2007 17:08

Hi

I also have been invited by Air New Zealand for an assesment day on March the 12th @13.15 eeeeeeee!

Would be good to hear from anyone on the same day. And any Air NZ crew who have any good advice on what to expect!

Oh and please excuse the name!!! lol I can't change it! :p

Aliyyah 5th Mar 2007 18:00

qantaswannabie!

Congratulations qantaswannabie!
Did you already get your invitation by e-mail?

qantaswannabie! 6th Mar 2007 08:06

Hi

No they said they would email me all the details but as of this morning nothing has arrived. I'm guessing you are the same? I was worried that they had the wrong email address but I confirmed it several times with two different people on the phone?

I shall let you know when I do!

:)

warwicks 6th Mar 2007 11:38

Just been away on a Long Haul trip and when I got back I had a message from Air New Zealand.
I have been sucessful!!! Cant believe it- I have the interview on Wednesday 14th in the afternoon.

They told me that I would receive and e mail but have not got anything yet.

So happy about getting through. :)

Aliyyah 6th Mar 2007 11:53

Great warwicks! I am so happy for you!!! :ok:
So, now I will see you at the Assessment Day, March 14th at 13:15.
By the way, I also haven`t received the invitation yet.

qantaswannabie! 7th Mar 2007 10:08

Confirmation email

Hi

Just got the confirmation email from Air NZ this morning.

They want you to bring an Ophthalmologist - eyetest too. I Referred back to the website and it says thats only if you wear contacts or glasses but it seems they are now asking everyone too provide that!! They do say you can supply it at a later date if sucsessful.

Also I have a St Johns 1st aid at work certificate but its over a year old! In my current job as cabin crew onboard a fast ferry I have ongoing 1st aid training onboard during drills etc...don't know if this is acceptable! They didn't ask me about it at telephone interview stage.

Guess I will have to call Air NZ to see whether it is still worth attending or not

:{ :{ :{

Aliyyah 7th Mar 2007 13:13

I also received my invitation today! :ok:

warwicks 7th Mar 2007 15:10

Hello everyone,

I recieved my invitation e mail as well. I called them with regards to the first aid course and found out that the airline require an external first aid certificate.

Does anybody know what ones are suitable as there are so many out there and there seems to be a large variation in the cost of these!

:)

wan2fly 7th Mar 2007 16:52

Hey warwick....

Well done matey ( and the rest of you )

Check out st johns ambulance they will do a course for you - When I got job at ANZ they said that we could supply at a later date after the interview but as long as you get one - so if you have booked on to a course take the course info with you and that will prove you are doing it...

When I applied it was different to what happens now - so I cant give you any info on the interview - but i remember the 221 was about 40 mins and the group assessment was about 1.5-2 hrs long it was fun and i enjoyed the day. I decided to take Qantas in the end but I have a friend ( who lives in L'spa Warwick,) and she flies for ANZ at the mo she started last year and really likes it her money is quite good i think at ANZ the salary is lower but the allowances are higher so all in all i think works out similar to mine.

i also went for a medical with ANZ and it was a lot more thorough than QF but it was at an American Airlines Medical centre not that the two airlines test for different things but ANZ deffo used more gadgets etc etc but it was ok. the eye test is a new thing to me too.

Warwicks let me know how u get on good luck
xx

PS - qf are recruiting too !!!!!

MissApproach 7th Mar 2007 18:08

Confirmation

Hi all,

I got my confirmation email too. They have been very kind to give us so much information, although it seems to be what I expected.

The Ophthalmologist test though!? I am not able to get this before my interview.

Qantas(NZ)wannabie-I guess we will meet on the assessment day! I will be wearing a kiwi on my head ;) !!

Thanks for the info Wan2fly. Let's hope it WILL be a fun day regardless.
