How much experience do Aus airlines look for?

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue show a minimum of 18 years of age for applying for Cabin Crew positions, which got me thinking, are many people below 20 hired? Obviously the amount of work experience at this age would, most likely, consist of a few part time jobs at places like maccas, maybe a few months full time at restaurant or RSL etc to get responsible service of alcohol etc, would airlines consider this amount of experience enough, if the candidate ticks all the other boxes?

I have noticed, on Virgin Blue in particular, some crew do look very young, but more often than not are also very mature and capable, will their personality outdo experience when recruiters make their decisions?

Cabin Crew

Good morning

I am 27 years old and have decided that I would like to change my career and become a cabin crew member.

My father has worked in the aviation industry for 30 years and therefore I have been travelling around the world since I was a small child.

I have a number of years of customer service experience, I am the right height and I can swim.

I am currently living in South Africa

Any information to assist me to get into the industry would be greatly appreciated.

Well , you're older than me, so feels odd giving you advice, but I hope this helps.
I am 20 yrs old, and gave the open day for Qatar Airways Cabin Crew in New Delhi, India. Qatar Airways have been holding these campaigns all around the world for quite a long time,its been 3-4 months I believe. Me and 6 other guys and girls got selected out of around 2000 people, so its quite competetive. This is the link for the dates on the campaigns, you can check that out :

I believe they had an open day TODAY, 16TH January at Cape Town,south africa....!! I wish you're aware of this, and have already attempted it...!!

Well, there are some airlines which have "swimming" as one of their "requirements", but usually its not a primary requirement, coz they probably teach you to float and swim freestyle at least during training. Its always an advantage to know swimming, as some airlines have made that mandatory. You can always learn how to swim in a couple of weeks anyway, so no need to fret dear..!

AVshrey88 in the UK at least it is a CAA mandatory requirement that CC can swim a specified distance, usually 25 metres.

I do not know of any UK airline that offers swimming lessons as part of their training course. It may be different elsewhere.

Viett_boy check the entry requirements of the airline you are applying for. If they state swimming don't apply until you can. If you turn up on a course and you can't do this it will be identified when you are tested on the wet drills.

If you cannot do this it is likely you will be booted off the course

I would say regardless of your wish to be an FA learn to swim anyway. It could save your life one day

There are cabin crew as young as 19 ranging to over 50 at Virgin Blue. The very young ones had more experience than just part-time at Maccas though. They had at least one year of fulltime work experience. I imagine the situation would be similar everywhere.

Airlines like to hire across a range of ages, life experience and personality types. It creates a wide and varied mix of crew. Of course with the new lower entry pay they may not attract such a variety of people anymore. I imagine the more mature people will find it difficult to take such a large pay cut to come and work for an airline. They would have established careers that pay them far more already.

height

Are there airlines that accept females who stand 5'2"? Those that were really hired... What really is the purpose of this height requirement because I'm just 5'2" but I was able to reach the overhead compartment cover. Pls. share your experience. TIA for the info

Does anyone know is it wise to attend an Open Day in some other country (after a month or two) if you didn't pass first AD selection (group discussions)? (I am asking for Emirates.)

As I didn't make it through the second round and didn't reach FI, might I attend some other OD soon? And if i would pass through the FI what are the chances that they would find out that I recently attended and didn't wait for 6 months?

I heard for one case of a girl who was returned during the psychometric tests as they got information that she attended less than 6 monhts ago.

And if it that would occur, can it happen that they will always be rejecting in you in the future and that you will never get the job after that and because of that????

What do you think? Or know?

Training Course for Cabin Crew

Has anyone done any courses that has helped them get a position as a Cabin Crew? I see there is one in Brisbane "Aviation Australia" costs approx $7000 for 10 weeks. Just want to have an honest answer as to whether or not these courses are worth doing.

I've been told that they're not worth it, because they are exactly the same as Ground School, and if you are offered a position with an airline, they're going to give you all that training anyway, and would you to have developed THEIR habits rather than the habits that Aviation Australia teach you. Also, I've been told that it doesn't look any better or worse on your resume if you've done one. So, I wouldn't bother.

$7000 is a lot of money when there may be no job at the end.

In the UK there are various companies that offer one day course to give hopeful cabin crew an insight to the role and tips on interviews etc.

Colleges here do travel and tourism courses which will be of benefit.

The only way in is and good interview on the day and your airline will give you full training.

My daughter hopes to become crew after uni for experience and has registered for a one day course.

Bottom line is she will have to be good on the day!!.

tatoo

i have a little problem...
i kinda lie during my interview.. i mean, it was more just like hiding something..
i have a small tatoo on my foot and during the interview i put foundation and you couldn't see anything.. And i thought of doing that all the time, it's very efficient.
However now that i got my medical clearence, and that the training approched, i am starting to think more and i am very affraid that they gonna sack me during the "swimming training".
What should i do?!"?!

Your best bet is stop worrying and cover it with a plaster from the chemist that is water resistant. If anyone asks just say you cut yourself. I doubt anyone will notice. Relax, you'll be fine.
