Well done xEMMAX!!!!!!

As yet I`ve heard nothing. Aparently they have not received my reference form even though I have submitted it to them!!!!! Slightly confused and annoyed that this has not been pointed out to me earlier. I`m away flying at the moment and its the weekend so not a lot I can do about it at the moment. But I think once I get back its time to give them a call to find out what the story is???????

So my sister has applied for the LHR shorthaul crew. How long has it taken for you to hear back and if successful, how long until training at Cranebank, a few months?

Goodluck for the rest of you!

cityguy, I'd definitely give them a call when you get back to try and sort things out. They said to me first I had to fax over something with my address on, so I did... hour later offered my start date! Obviously if the reference issue will affect when you'll be given a start date, just give them a call to explain the situtation, hopefully you'll get it sorted ASAP!

And thanks : D

roll_over when did she have her interview?

I had mine 19th Feb, found out I'd got it 21st Feb and was offered my training date Friday... which'll be 16th June, 3 months today! : D

But I know others who found out a couple of days after, and a week after... so it's impossible to say when she'll hear something. They give you plenty of time before your course starts to prepare though.

Commuting

Hi guys I appreciate you have probably aswered this loads of times.

I'm considering applying for either the LGW vacancy or may go for the temp LHR WW.

2 questions what duties, a/c would I be doing from LGW, mixed??
And for both positions ad states that you must live within 90 minutes from base airport. I live on the south coast and would prefer to remain there.

At the interview I will say that i'm prepared to move , which i am, but I can reach LGW just within 90 mins but don't really know bout LHR.

Any help, suggestions?? Cheers guys x

For the amount of times that you will actually have to do standby at LHR, you can risk living further afield than 90 minutes. You may even do your standby on a quick response basis from the crew hotel, which they pay you for and cover the hotel cost.

People DO commute for LGW but it is not as easy and how it works will depend on how you bid. It is mixed flying and was not really set up for commuting which is one of the reasons for the high attrition rate.

When I worked for BA the last time, I was short-haul, 6 days on 3 days off. I understand that there is now a bidding system in place and days off are 10 a month.
I have a question for any oldies out there who may remember lieu days and duty-free weeks. (Nothing to do with tax free sales!!) If I recall correctly, we had around 9 lieu days a year for all the bank holidays we worked, and these could be taken when we liked, provided there were enough crews to cover, although the lieu day had to have been worked before we took it.
Also, we had an extra 6 days off on top of our leave which was known as the duty free week. Does this still exsist? We were able to sell it back to the company and work if we needed extra money. With the bid system, can you still manipulate the roster to work 6 and 3 if you like? Do you think the bid system is fair? By that I mean :do you get a good mix of trips both hours-wise and money-wise? I know this will all be covered on the training course, but it would be good to know beforehand.
Thanks.
Landlady.

Hi Landlady

You seem to be quite experienced in the recruitment process for BA. I am thinking of applying to become cabin crew but don't know if I am too old? Do you happen to know if there are many newbies to this over 50?
Many thanks

Hi,

I've just applied for LGW, i understand i would do a mix of long/short haul. would probs rent a room down there but would want to commute up north as much as possible - do many do this?
Also - roughly how many sby's do you get per month?
Where are LGW interviews normally held?
Do you get discounts on travelling with other airlines down to LGW?
How many people are normally at the Interviews?
Are there exams to be taken at the interview?

Thanks in advance!!!
Diane x

amandini,

I recall around a month back an article in the BA news regarding a lady at 55 starting as crew so I think the answer to you question is YES!

Hi there amandini,

You will not be turned away from an interview because you are over 50, BA are not ageist nor fattist! I will be returning to E/F crew and I am almost 55, which means that I have 10 years to give BA, and this time around I will have no child-care worries! I am also less tired than I was when my children were young.
There are several people I know who are over 50 and who are either in the process of applying or who have been sucessful. A recent passenger poll made it clear that pax like to see mature individuals on board, it re-assures them and it appears that mature cabin crew are more approachable than our younger collegues. (Not my words; in my experience I have rarely encountered a member of cabin crew who was unapproachable, no matter what their age.)

So, if you want a new lease of life, go for it!

To one or two people on this forum who have been slightly less then impressed by the employment of us oldies I will say this: if future governments carry on the way that this one has, everyone will be expected to work into thier 70s, as pensions will not be worth the paper they are written on and the cost of simply living will be so astronomical that it will be a necessity to work and not negotiable. It could be you one day! But how nice to have chosen a career whereby it is possible to work until you are 65 if you can, and , if you want.

I will say that I am really looking forward to going back, I will give it my best shot and I am really looking forward to meeting and working with all my new collegues, young or old, fat or thin, black, white, yellow or pink! We have been selected because we have something which can't be learned or aquired - the natural ability to put the customer first and be pleased to be doing it.

Hi there - I am based at LGW and have been for nearly 2 years....some of the best people I fly with are over 50 so you girls/Guys go for it!!!!! get to do some amazing shopping in Orlando where our hotel is in the actual shopping mall!!! Average take home pay per month is £1400 and above!!! although during training and probably one or two months after this it wont be that great so save those pennies!!! LGW is a fantastic base and will just get better so dont be put off by any rumours or negative stuff you read on here. Love all the trips we do here and have no intention of transferring bases. Likely to get one or two stand-by blocks a month, LGW interviews are held at Cranebank, Dont remember any tests in the interview just be yourself ...think of scenarios(work related) where you've been under pressure, had to deal with an awkward customer etc etc....

Thanks everyone for all the info. You're right landlady we could be working until our 70's the way things are going! They say you need GCSE Maths and English but cos these were taken over 30 years ago, I haven't a clue where the certificates are! Do they insist on having these before taking an application further do you know?
