The money is in managing the sheetmetal not flying them. Guys that just gotta sit in a seat can make more money by chasing big type ratings and go wherever a job is. Have fun. The most highly paid airline or corporate pilot spending two weeks out his life living in hotels is NOT banging his wife, doing hobbies, spending times with kids, ect ect.

Personally I would laugh at someone telling me that I should make less money for flying a Falcon 900 vs a G550 because that would only elicit this response...'so buy a G550...oh, you can't afford it? Is that it? So what your telling me is that when you have the stones to afford that plane, then magically my flying skills and experience magically instantaneously equate to your new revised bottom line. I see, so what you are saying is that if I can find a Saudi Prince to send me to school for 2 week on the next hottest aircraft, then all of a sudden I am worth more money? It has nothing to do with my 20 years in this skill set. Ok, I get it. Yeah, ok. "

My father in law fly's a G200 and makes as much if not more then a G550/650 pilot. He is not fully retired yet but I joke with him that it sure seems like he is. Fly's for a private owners and I would say 75% of the trips are for vacation. Week in cabo here, Week in Hawaii to check on property, Skiing in Utah. Total flying time last year was less then 170hrs.

Why does he get paid so well.
1.He treats the owners wallet like it's his own.
2.Makes sure they are getting the BEST prices. Looks for the best deals ON everything Fuel, Maintenance etc...
3.Has a great personality.
4.And most of all the experience. He flew for the air force and then commercial Captain on 757,767 and has over 28,000+ hours.

The owners even told him when he official retires they want him to stay on to over look the flight dept. because they trust him so much. (they have two other planes)

YOU CREATE YOUR OWN VALUE. A plane model does not.

FYI, the guy who BUYS the jet is called the BUYER or OWNER. The guy who lists and sells them is called a broker....

And "managing" jets and flight departments is a job for suckers... Sure, you get paid better than the line captains, but you pay a huge price, with owners, service providers, and crew members all calling you at all hours day and night.

Enjoy your life, and look for a job flying from one vacation to another, or find a "job" that pays real money.

Technically...(and this is from Boeing Business Jets) any "non airline" configured Boeing is a BBJ. So those VIP/VVIP/corporate interiors on the B744 B777 and obviously the 737 variants etc make them "BBJ's". That's how Boeing sells em, and that's how they are marketed...just sayin' !

FrankR, your response belies someone that doesn't have the skill set to aspire to more then flying back and forth. Like you said the Aviation Manager makes more money, and yep, he has to deal with the people, but you know what.....He gets to bang his wife every night while you make knuckle babies to cable porn in the hotel room for week. He gets to do his hobbies, on his own schedule, gets to see his kids grow up and usually gets to cherry pick the flights he wants to take, giving you the crap ones. An most importantly? He tells you what to do. He is your boss. If you gotta anniverary that you have been waiting for, Xmas with the kids....YOU get that flight, that's right...meanwhile he's trimming the tree and chasing his wife around the house that night.

You're right on a few points here. When you're the boss you make the rules, but when you take all the good trips, the pilots quickly resent you, and then you end up having beers with guys who you know can't stand you.

As for being gone vs being home with the wife and kids, you should figure that one out before you take your CPL checkride. If you want to be home every night and manage people and gin up budgets, buy a pizza pub.

I've spent plenty of years in management and around managers. Partly, we all should take a turn, but in my view, 70% of the time it's pilots who are burned out or with weak flying and people skills who gravitate to the office jobs.

Nope, a reasonable schedule and a blackberry that only goes off when a flight plan and hotac info shows up is what it's about if you are a professional pilot. Aviation managers are neither pilots or managers, just frustrated and burned out little men hiding in an office along with the angry old flight attendants.

If someone gave me a free type, a six figure job, and told me that it was me or him that had to take the Xmas trip, I would volunteer for the flight rather then resent that fact that he didn't take the bullet.

And like you said, if you would rather go flying, or rather stay home, then that can be worked out with the other pilots. A good dept manager would probably give that flight to the single guys that would otherwise be depressed sitting around on Xmas alone watching TV. I don't see any resentment other then what you manufactured.

A good dept manager wouldn't be so stupid as to think single guys necessarily sit around watching TV at Xmas in a depressed stae. What caricature of a world do you live in?

I think your picture of a flight department is out of movie where a bunch of white scarfed aviatiors are sitting around the hanger slapping each other on the back after regailing each other of their daring after battling the forces of evil that day.

You need to hit stop on those old World War I movies, and head out to the airport and talk to the guys that do this for a living.
