The photo posted by Tartiflette ( the orange Citation) is quite extraordinary. Here you have 6 extremists who used wire cutters to make a hole in the security fence of an airport, , damaged an aircraft, climbed on the wings to glue themselves to it, and you have 4 police officers watching and wondering what to do. The article says , they were not even arrested and were released after the event. Strange world we are living in at the moment.....

They - the police - did do one better thing, they brought them to the station so that 'little ones' could take the last train off the island, in order to be home in time. Meanwhile, 'misgendering' can bring you in front of a judge...
The CJs Engines need an overhaul I have been told, as they took the engine covers off and sprayed them. I recon thats about 300kUSD per side, give or take..

Happily they are being prosecuted for ; trespassing, coercion and criminal damage. This report says they removed the engine-covers and then sprayed paint into the engines. I can imagine that that deliberate action to cause extensive damage may cost them dearly in court.

So the next step - take all their possessions, and I mean all, and spray them with indelible paint - their electronic devices, their clothes, their furniture, their bedding, their means of transport (bikes or whatever), I mean everything, absolutely everything.

Not so clever now is it?

If they're terrified of not having a future, what do they think of a future which includes a lengthy jail time for trespassing, vandalism, destruction of property... along with a hefty bill for cleaning up the mess they made.

New F-35 paint job coming soon to a UK motorway

It will be interesting to see the response when they try and paint a F-35 landing on a UK motorway.

From a logical perspective, isn't this argument typical whataboutism though? Anybody could always claim that his/her emissions are only such and such, you can always find a bigger villain. Like any small country could say, hey, we are only 0.X%, China could say, hey, per capita we are only X%, USA could say, hey, per GDP we only produce XX%. It would never stop.

Not per capita, not if you add historic pollution over the age of the industrialisation etc. That is exactly what I mean, you can always find an excuse.

I would argue the question can't be about the relative emissions to total emissions, but must look at the possible alternatives. Is it justified to emit ten times more to enjoy a beach break a few hours quicker just because I can afford it?

I can't help but to agree with the protesters, I think they have a point. It's not only morally wrong that rich people behave this way, it also poisons the society and the debate. Again, the next guy will say, hey, my trip to Bali on Virgin used only a tenth of what a private jet would have used!

We should not justify violence when it is based on good intentions. Those guys indeed have a point , but it does not justify what they did.
By tolerated such actions, we encourage more violence and I fear all this is not going to end well..

Now that said, taking your "point' a bit further, discussing this with my 21 years old daughter yesterday while watching the news (extreme and record high temperatures all over the world, , etc..) we all have to start doing something. Justifying excesses on the name of economical growth and jobs preservation does not work anymore on this young generation. On the German Citation , it appears the owner is a German national living in Germany , who registered the aircraft in Austria for taxes reasons , flew from Momchengladbach to Sylt ( 400 NM ) using fuel which is not taxed. All perfectly legal . But defending this right while "normal people" are urged by the Governement not to use their private cars and use public transport, and cannot enter the center of their own cities because they have an older diesel car , is becoming a very difficult exercise..

Putting paint into the engine, pitots, static ports etc is sabotage by definition. The windscreens of this jet are around 25K USD each, and they can be damaged by this level of vandalism. The police should be aware that if they don't care to take action against the vandals, they are aiding and abetting criminal action. These aircraft insurers do not have an obligation normally to pay for wilful damage. I had an aircraft severely damaged by vandals, and that was the first point of comment by the police and the insurers. the police were shocked when the insurance adjuster confirmed my prior comment, that wilful damage is normally excluded. If that is the case, the airport has the responsibility for security and they have evidently failed. Those windows may be damaged depending on what the paint was.

Anyone setting off a smoke flare near an aircraft wilfully like that is going to be eating the business end of a fire extinguisher if I have a say in the matter. There is a fair likelihood these aircraft are used in part for medivac or similar operations, all of mine are dedicated to medivac and I will not be kindly to someone damaging a critical care aircraft, not even a little bit of amusement.

well some, nice colours, if they can clean the windscreens.

For the superglue, I would suggest garden shears, the individual might find enthiusiasm to release him/herself. Would be snipping at the far end of the person, until we get to the stuck bit that remains.

I would argue it was not violence, it was "just" paint on an aircraft. Still a felony, but nobody got hurt. And although I would not like my children to be involved in this, I can't help but noticing that we would not talk about private jets and emissions without these kind of actions. I am ambiguous about this case, same as you if I interpret your post correctly.

This is vandalism no doubt and costly but one has to also look at the view from younger generations

Only a couple of people here point out the one law for the rich element here and like it or not biz jets are not really necessary , Very few places are unreachable by airline or surface travel or a combinationand are business deals really that important that people have to use them as opposed to conventional means, if rich powerful peopel had to use airports think how much better the airports would run . Biz jets dont contribute much overal to polution but per passenger they are pretty horrendous compared to airline travel.and a lot of them end journeys in such international trading centres as Aspen, St Barts, St Moritz which doesnt exactly underline their so called critical importance to international business does it.

I think draping posters over them or similar would be fine if they want to protest but paint is obviously very damaging as inded would be jumping up and down on the ailerons but calling for years in jail is just reactionary nonsense, Remember that we can vote, post these commensts on line and live life the way we do because people protested about excessive power and priveldge in the past.

i find it very hard to believe that there is any real "hold" between skin and bitumen which is fundamentally oily. The degree of over-acting by the male in that French video is just ridiculous.

Aviation is responsible for between 3%-5% of TOTAL global CO2 emissions. Stopping every single aircraft flying today would do nothing to stop climate change. These idiots are turning people away from being eco friendly. Totally counter productive.

I don't see why. If protestors vanalise something very expensive , I don't see why they shouldn't be treated very harshly. What's the difference between this and burning down the house of the chief spokesman for Shell ?
