RVSM N reg Beware

FAA Announces Heightened Enforcement Against Unauthorized Entry Into
RVSM Airspace
by Scott Burgess

The FAA indicated an intention to enforce against the unauthorized use
of entry into reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) airspace by
operators that are not RVSM qualified and authorized. Apparently, some
pilots file flight plans using suffix that indicates they are
authorized for RVSM operations without actually holding the proper FAA
letter of authorization (LOA) for flight in RVSM airspace.

The FAA is now considering filing pilot deviations for future
instances where this occurs. Penalties can range from suspension of
airman’s privileges (30 to 90 days for each occurrence), revocation of
airman’s privileges, and/or criminal prosecution for violation of 18
USC §1001. Before conducting a flight in RVSM airspace, operators and
crew are reminded to verify that they hold a valid RVSM Letter of
Authorization issued by the FAA.

I don`t know why, I`ve been around long enough, but I still find it incredible people are stupid and foolish enough to fly without RVSM equipment, let alone qualifications and documentation.

It is not at all uncommon for European operators of N reg aircraft to fly without the appropriate opspec especially when ferrying, or taking on a new aircraft from a previous operator. It's been going on for years. Many are under the illusion that if an airplane was at one time certified for rvsm, it will remain so.

I'll bet the farm that many operators think they are rvsm approved, but don't have the paperwork to substantiate any real approval.

Deefer Dog

We had that very problem ferrying a 560 to the USA just before Christmas! Recent transfer to N reg and no RVSM approvals through!
The aircraft was RVSM bar paperwork and we could have gone iceland direct Goose had we elected to fly at 42k.
Nevertheless we elected to fly at 28K and take the extra fuel burns and stops!
Reading this glad we did
