"aviation has been like this for 90 years"
May we ask our distinguished aviation collegue AERONCAMAN what his current position in this hard and bloodbath world of aviation is ???
You talk about making provisions for such a hard and rainy period.. some of us unfortunately.. "present company apparently excluded".. do not have the means or financial backing to make such wonderous preperations for the dear and dark future .
It is a fact that our "great" leaders kept on employing people when it was clear that the industry is taking a rather hard turn for the worst, such people whom will obviously not be named is still very happy and secure in their plush leather bound office chairs and their nice big fat salary.
As far as the comment you made about the company still looking after you when they are going through a "hard time" by letting you keep 60% of your salary.. well .. they have their image to upkeep.. god forbid they should ever loose that !!!
so in other words..

The management are either really clever or really stupid.
They have got crews to reduce their overall package including travel, etc, without a murmur from crews. They are on course to make huge savings at crew's costs, probably achieving certain targets that trigger bonuses for them.
On the other hand there is a huge overcrewing problem and an Ab initio scheme that is in direct contrast to owner's wishes for experienced crews. The customer service scheme is run by ex RAF who do not have a clue about customer service (why not use professionals if it is that important). Coffee is served in plastic cups with powdered milk and Oreo cookies, whilst the whisky is the cheapest brand on the market, some customer service! At least crews know how to apologise for the service.
The redundancy package is great but very few will have the time to take it, because it will take more than 6 weeks to get a new job. The jobshare will give management the chance to pick and choose who gets full salary. Most will have to take jobshare,as 60% of something is better than 100% of nothing. It will be tough for all especially since the upgrades are now 4 years away.
However, happiness would be restored for a period if Beardy was hung out to dry!

And as far as a job goes.. well.. they seem to be very scarce.. if you had a B747 rating and was current.. well Vietnam airlines are looking..

and it all makes you wonder why NetJet goes and buys into a nearly bankrupt general avaition airfield (EDFE).... especially one with lots of resistance from the neighbors (well, which airfield has NO resistance from neighbors )
