Rusty Trombone posted while I was typing/researching...

Upslope:
Stop speculating and get the facts.
You better get YOUR facts straight my friend.
Did you read the document I posted? There are your facts.
I also just got off the phone with Flight Safety in Dallas and the friendly lady told me that most customers come in on a B-1 (Business) Visa.

B-1 Visa
Generally, the travel appropriate for a business (B-1) visitor visa includes travel these examples of travel to:
- Consult with business associates;
- Attend a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or a conference on specific dates;
- Settle an estate;
- Negotiate a contract;
- Participate in short-term training.

The approximate waiting time for nonimmigrant visa's in London today is 19 days, plus 3 days to be processed.

If the border patrol officer decides not to enforce the law, fine and I don't even doubt that most guys sail right through, no questions asked. But the fact of the matter is, that getting in on the Visa Waiver Program for the sole purpose of getting a type rating is ILLEGAL, period.
See what happened to CirrusF, prove enough?
Even most people come here and do (computer) consulting cannot do more than just attend meetings, no actual work (for example programming etc.) is allowed.

I've been through all the f*** Visa regs myself! After all I'm already in the country, trying to help others.

...walks away shaking his head wondering why he's doing all this for other people only to get shot down...

Yes, recollect my wife remarking on the polite conversation of the nice young man at immigration. Bit disappointed when I pointed out that the 'polite conversation' was actually a low key interrogation just to confirm our authenticity and not a genuine interest in a couple of old Limeys

ESTA Link

Check 6, thanks for your link at #8......just got my ESTA approval in under 5 minutes.
For all of you wanting to go and do Recurrent Trg, courses, ferry flights etc., YOU NEED AN ESTA APPROVAL before you travel on a commercial carrier, whatever C1/D (operating crew visas) you have in your p/p, since 12 Jan 09.
Use Check 6's link and it is totally straightforward, painless and quick and lasts for 2 years and costs nowt.

Aeroncaman, you are completely correct that if you have the appropriate visa already (eg. a B1 visa) , you do not need the ESTA approval. If however you are going into the US by commercial carrier on the Visa waiver programme (i.e. NOT as operating crew) with only a C1/D visa (not appropriate for travelling as a pax) then as I read it, you will require an ESTA approval.

ESTA Approval

If anyone can still be bothered to read this thread, and still wants to go to the US as a pax on the visa waiver programme, then for 5 mins. of your precious time, go to permalink #8 and get your approval, valid for 2 yrs. I just wrote the number on my passport adjacent to the US Visa page.....easy. If you don't need it when you get there, don't show 'em.... if you do, then you have it!

Been looking at the visa requirements for type rating.

FlightSafety don't issue I-20-Ms for anything other than the academy where you do your ab-initio stuff, not any of the learning centres, so you can't get an M-1 for those.

They furnished me with the letter from the Dept of State, but London Consulate just regurgitate the paragraphs about "if you're going to study you need an M-1 etc"

The whole lot's just a bloody great mess ! Do you go, don't you, who do you believe ?!
