Income protection insurance for ag pilots?
Hi all
Anyone out there know of a reputable company that can offer Aussie ag pilots income protection insurance for a decent cost. I think that many think that we are a high risk group and won't give any cover.

Income Protection-Its possible,but only just.
After 20 years with cover in the airlines-Ive now got to get cover myself for self employed/freelancing duties.
If your NOT in a group scheme,there are 5 providers and only 1 will look at pilots.This I stress is for UK folks only,and is limited to $7000 pcm for 48 months with a 13 week deferral. The only provider is Cirencester Friendly,whove been around over 100 years,but primarily deal with agricultural workers-but their underwriter will take me on,having survived 20 plus years "flyin planes".
As a group(along with cabin crew incidentally) we are deemed high risk,I have no idea why,perhaps Ag flying more so,yes but if done correctly your safe we know.But the reason given is that for a "minor health event", a professional pilot could lose his/her income through loss of Class1.Thereby NO income for the individual,but for the insurance company you could still drive a truck,stack shelves or become a plasterer,all noble pursuits but not exactly what you may have in mind after years of working up the ladder.
But this means,we could still do "other work" therefore,as we are deemed by the insurance industry to be earning way in excess of reality,they will not cover us for a potential "loss".
According to my broker,a surgeon/dentist/vet is in the same boat,lose a finger and your options are limited thereafter.

I'm not sure I understood anything you said. Are you saying that you have found employment insurance for ag pilots which pays you if you're unable to do ag work, or become disabled doing aerial application?

When you have some real experience and have something to contribute to the thread, by all means give it a shot.
Yes, I fly a 747. I have been a long time ag pilot, having started doing that work as a teenager, until today. And yes, I flew the Piaggio...and about 45 other types, as well. The ag work I've done has ranged from cubs to the more modern Air Tractor AT-802, to several large four engine airplanes, both piston and turbine, and has included row crops, wildland fire suppression, mosquito abatement, rangeland protection, and other types of agricultural flying.
Ag work isn't a guarantee type of work. One never knows how much flying one will get in any season, and can never plan for or expect a given income. One may have a very good season, or a very poor season. Accordingly, one should not reasonably expect that an employer or a company will insure or attempt to guarantee what is unpredictable and inconsistent. A run of Russian Wheat Aphid may produce considerable unforecast spraying, whereas a drought or poor crop may mean little work, and many unpaid jobs.

I'd certainly be interested in learning about such a program that might exist out there. Whereas ag work isn't really a pension or 401K or retirement type of employment, one's income protection usually rests in one's ability to save and in one's bank account. It's a little like life insurance while flying ag...but the difference is that it is possible to get life insurance in some cases.

The answer: Call up your insurance agent to get referalls to agents that deal with loss of license, income loss preventions, ect. Lloyds will insure anything...for a price if you want to take it that far.

WL, The man to talk to is John Ellis, he is an insurance broker that has vast experince in the AG industry, I dont have his contact details at hand but he did have a trade display at the AAAA's convention in Tassie, I'm sure if you were to contact Phill Hurst he would put you in touch wth him.
