Moving To Europe
Hello fellow aviators,
one simple question;
Is $170 000 US after tax, enough to live in europe (France/Italy, not a major city), starting with nothing and a family of 5, 2 kids and a fury girlfriend (dog).
Don't want to entertain who, with, what about the job etc.
Will we be comfortable???
Any thoughts or comments.

Strange question and, is it ever enough?
You will be able to live comfortably on that I would have thought but then again each person's definition of comforatble will differ. Do you do dinners at "MacDonlads" or at "Le Cafe very fancy"?
Should be fine.

No wonder your girlfriend's in a fury if you keep calling her a dog
cost of living index based on New York = 100 Might give a rough indication.

Very honestly: affirmative!
NetJets Europe, for example, is paying their captains 95.000 € as a starting salary, which equals to 141.000 $ today. Most people whom I know can live with that comfortably but, as others above already said, it depends on your lifestyle and 'overheads' that you're carrying with you. The average salary within aviation (= flightcrews) is said to be around 78.000€ / year...
Just some numbers: renting a small house or appartment for your family @ 140 square meters in a nice neighbourhood would account for about 2.000€/month in Munich, which is one of the most expensive cities in Germany. Stuttgart, Düsseldorf or Hamburg would be roughly the same, Berlin cheaper.
In London you'd have to expect to pay more than that, the same applies to Paris or the coastal regions of the south of France. Expensive places are: Copenhagen and the other major cities in Scandinavia, Zürich or Geneva, Brussels or Amsterdam and also Vienna. Cheaper are some easter European cities like Prague, Bratislava or Ljubljana, but they're working on it...
You know that one litre of gas for your car costs around 1,50€ today. Energy costs have mounted significantly recently, so expect to pay quite a lot for electricity and warming the house.
You can never have enough, but most people make much less - and they're getting along. Welcome to 'old Europe'.
