NetJets Captain upgrade...

Hello all!

I am interested in knowing how NJE prioritizes captain upgrades. Are the upgrades awarded based on seniority or solely on flight time/experience?

On their website they post 3000hrs as their mins for upgrade, indicating that a new-hire that comes in with that amount can expect to upgrade within 6 months.

Does seniority play a part in any of this upgrading, or is it simply that they are super-short on captains and virtually all FOs have less than 3000hrs? (and therefore forced to upgrade anyone who meets the mins, even if it means violating seniority)

The reason I'm asking is that I'm at 2000hrs right now, working for a scheduled carrier. While my goal is to work at NJE, I'm wondering if it would be smarter to wait one year, get an extra 800 hours, so that if I get hired at NJE I would upgrade much sooner than if I went there right now (since I hear NJE pilots on short haul fly only 300-450/year).
Do you guys think this is a good idea? Or is it just better to get hired ASAP for seniority reasons?

Also, last question, does anyone know what determines short-haul vs. long-haul assignment once hired at NJE? Once hired, every how often can one transition between the two?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

upgrade is based generally on a mix of ability, experience and recommendation by captains you fly with. I think the hours issue is one of insurance, it used to be a minimum of 2500 for command but that may have changed.

The operation is very different from scheduled airline and it can take time to get used to it, so I would say 6 months on-line is a sensible figure to look at before upgrade. Yes the company is still expanding rapidly but that will slow at some point (I am not management so don't ask me when!), and then progression to command will also slow.

The command course is not a "tick in the box" exercise, neither is it stupidly difficult, a lot of effort is put in to try to get people through, HOWEVER, not everyone gets through first go. Some people just seem to forget everything they have been taught and others arrive ill prepared.

An important point, generally the less experience you have the more likely you are to go to big/long haul fleet on joining, as you will probably be there for some time. On upgrade you will NOT move right seat to left seat on big fleet, you will get command on a small/mid cabin aircraft. The largest aircraft where you move directly right to left seat is the Hawker 800.

As to whether it is better to join now or gain more experience and join in a years time, that I leave to you, everyones personal circumstances are different. Is it a good job? All I can say is that I enjoy it, like any job it has its "challenging moments" and days when you wish you had listened to your mother and become a postman, but on balance the good outweighs the bad by some distance, great colleagues to fly with, nice, new, modern aircraft, plenty of variety in the flying, stable roster 6 on/5 off (remember that 6 is away and could be anywhere-literally, and you don't know where from day to day) You need to decide if that works for you. Have a good day

My understanding is that the lowest-time and least experienced newhires (who obviously must meet the minimums) are more likely to get right seats in the bigger, longer-haul aircraft like the Gulfstream 550, Falcon 2000EX and upcoming Hawker 4000 and Falcon 7X (my favourite) because they can benefit from the experience of the senior Captains. They will learn how to fly fractional properly as well as learn more about flying, situational judgement, etc.

The more experienced newhires will likely start in the right seat on a smaller aircraft (Beechjet, XLS, Bravo or Hawker 800XPC) but expect to upgrade to left seat much faster because they have more experience and they can handle the upgrade... At least that is my understanding.

well that is true sometimes not always,.

Joining is a kind of gambling game, eventhough one has a good background experience with Captain time doesn t mean that person will join on small fleet and get a quick upgrade.
If Netjets needs first officers for the large Cabin aircraft they could well be picking someone with 4000 or 5000 hours jet experience and seat lock him on the right seat for 18 months at the minimum.

So when thinking of joining, think of the kind of operation netjets is doing and the life style , rather than a quick upgrade as you could be disappointed.

atr42500.... thanks for your post.

What are the seat lock times for small/medium cabin and long cabin respectively?

Just don't gamble. Wait a while if you have 6/7000hours and 3000 hours of decent command time and tell them only direct entry in the LHS is acceptable.

By that stage non of us care what type we fly, only the pay slip.

When the time comes, NJE will have to have a policy change over DEC recruitment.

I really enjoyed 6 on 5 off, just not the 30K Euros salary. Who can take that when any where else in Europe you are worth £80K?

All the best
