There's an interesting resonance between that guess and the answer, but no, it's not an ST-anything...

zlin77 19th Jan 2013 21:16

Piaggio Avanti..

TheiC 19th Jan 2013 21:17

Not the Avanti either...

TheiC 20th Jan 2013 15:24

To move things along a little, perhaps...

To two of Noyade's questions, I must answer: Yes; to one: No.

nacluv 20th Jan 2013 16:37

I've got an idea.

How about this: British? Yes. Civil? Yes. Turboprop Twin? No. How about a pair of Lycomings?

BN Islander?

Edit to add: There of course could be three Lycomings and therefore a Trislander?

Bravo Nacluv!

Hence why I was less than forthcoming with my original answer; there aren't many British civilian non-turboprop twins... Sorry Noyade, I hope you understand!

My 'baffled' clue may have helped

The Islander was manufactured at Bembridge, Isle of Wight, a stone's throw from the Saunders-Roe factory in Cowes...

This aircraft was on the cover of a British aviation magazine, and that edition was featured on their website for many months as an example back issue.

Nacluv has control.

nacluv 20th Jan 2013 17:07

Blimey - I wasn't 100% convinced myself! The IoW link did help to get me thinking in what turns out to be the right direction. Then I realised the viewpoint in the photo would be about right for someone in the r/h seat. The baffled clue, incidentally went right over my head.

Thanks TheiC for a great challenge - it was fun! :ok:

Now please excuse me while I rush off to find another...

nacluv 20th Jan 2013 17:32

Have a crack at this:

TheiC 20th Jan 2013 17:48

Probably rude to jump in so quickly, and almost certainly wrong: C-17?

nacluv 20th Jan 2013 18:22

Ha! Wrong on both counts, I'm afraid.

Not rude to jump in, and not wrong either. I didn't think it would last long!

You're back in control!

TheiC 20th Jan 2013 20:15

Many thanks. Try this...

Noyade 20th Jan 2013 20:24

A clever crop of the Beriev Be-12 mate?

TheiC 20th Jan 2013 20:35

Well, a crop of it... Obviously not a very clever one, perhaps!

I spent twenty minutes this morning working on a Tamworth clue for you but didn't get round to using it, I'm afraid.

Your control!

Noyade 20th Jan 2013 20:51

Thanks mate. Tamworth and the Islander? That would have made for an interesting clue!

Heading to work shortly, so - open house.

Cheers.

Noyade 22nd Jan 2013 05:17

Alright, not strictly an aeroplane "hole", but I'm sure there are some engine buffs here somewhere...

nacluv 22nd Jan 2013 15:54

Wild guess, but are we looking for an airship again?

Krakatoa 22nd Jan 2013 18:27

Possible American, Allison V-3420 engine

Noyade 22nd Jan 2013 18:57

Allison V-3420 engine
It is indeed mate! :ok:

Allison V-3420 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this case - the Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning...

Thank you Open House
