Experimental non-standard Flame Damper on a WW2 aircraft?

sabredog 9th Jun 2012 10:00

Certainly classed as a Flame Damper,Graeme, and is also of WW2 vintage.

Noyade 9th Jun 2012 10:17

Axis or allied?
Bomber or fighter?
Standard fitting?

:)

Noyade 9th Jun 2012 10:23

Terrence, if I 'mentally' remove the damper from me mind :) - what's left, is what would/should identify the aircraft?

sabredog 9th Jun 2012 13:06

An Axis bomber aircraft,Graeme. I am not too sure that by removing the Flame Damper, it would readily identify the aircraft/engine type. The photograph is available on the Web.

MReyn24050 9th Jun 2012 15:38

Savoia-Marchetti SM-82 I believe. I am intrigued to know if it was fitted to only one of the three engines?

sabredog 9th Jun 2012 16:57

That is correct,Mel.
SM.82 Flame Damper of German design, but I have no idea if they were fitted to all three engines.

I have it as the NASA X24B, which was I understand built by Martin-Marietta. However, you control . :ok:

Kitbag 9th Jun 2012 19:35

They were the same airframe, the A was modified into the B in 1972.

Evening Kitbag.

While contemplating my navel, I considered the Narval....?

Sud-Ouest SO.8000 Narval

Kitbag 10th Jun 2012 04:51

Spot on, the Narval was intended to be a French shipborne fighter, the programme was abandoned after 43 flights and many issues.

Have you got the right pic? Looks like a bit of 2 1/2" downpipe

Noyade 10th Jun 2012 09:08

Looks like a bit of 2 1/2" downpipe
It does. But I think they're a bit bigger - I'm estimating around 4 or 5 inches in diameter. Only produces approximately 35 lbs of thrust.

Noyade 10th Jun 2012 11:16

There are two of these "pipes", separated by 27 ft of rotor blade.
