And this is at the other end

Asturias56 9th Nov 2020 07:16

Does this airport still operate?

nvubu 9th Nov 2020 07:47

Yes, still in operation.

nvubu 9th Nov 2020 12:02

Here's a view out of the tower - even has the runway layout for you - which remained the same in GE overhead from 1999, today, two have gone (the single diagonal and the horizontal one on the plan), and the right hand vertical now a taxiway.

chevvron 9th Nov 2020 12:13

Wendover, Utah.

nvubu 9th Nov 2020 12:21

Not Wendover, you need to go further north.

Asturias56 9th Nov 2020 12:45

are we back at Logan Utah? I'm sure it was a challenge last year as well?

nvubu 9th Nov 2020 13:14

Not in Utah, keep going north.

Asturias56 9th Nov 2020 13:36

Great Falls and Malstrom AFB both have runways no longer in use

I can't get any old pictures of either but I think its more likely to be Malstrom

nvubu 9th Nov 2020 15:42

We aren't in Montana - you are now too far north, and way too far west.

Sultan Ismail 10th Nov 2020 00:04

Mountain Home AFB
Idaho, USA

Asturias56 10th Nov 2020 07:02

Sultan - that's WEST of Montana......

So north of Wendover & Logan, south of Malstrom and east of all them by quite a way - that takes us to the middle of the MidWest - so let's try Offut.

nvubu 10th Nov 2020 07:06

We aren't in Idaho either - you've gone even further west, but you are now only slightly north of the location.
Go east, well over a 1000 miles east.

Here's the view is from ground level, outside the tower.
https://am3pap004files.storage.live....&cropmode=none

Edit to add: Offut is still west of the target, south as well.

dixi188 10th Nov 2020 08:36

Is it Willow Run?
B24 factory.

nvubu 10th Nov 2020 10:09

It certainly is Willow Run - over to you dixi188

Asturias56, When you suggested Great Falls. I searched for Great Falls, and GE gave me "Great Falls Road" about 3 miles north of Willow Run :ok:

https://am3pap004files.storage.live....&cropmode=none

dixi188 10th Nov 2020 11:27

I spent a bit of time there with Zantop.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....dc8539d3ca.jpg
Try this.

nvubu 10th Nov 2020 12:17

Would that be the flight at Bruntingthorpe?

dixi188 11th Nov 2020 11:07

Yes. The last accidental flight of a Victor.
I didn't think it would last long.

nvubu 11th Nov 2020 13:01

It was the only flight of the Victor that I could think of.

I'm a bit tied up at work at the moment, so Open House for anyone that wants to post up a challenge.

India Four Two 12th Nov 2020 08:38

Those are RHD Morris PV vans. Somewhere in The Empire?

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 08:47

Very much in the Empire but who's ? Image taken in 1947 - two years after airfield closure. Leading you a bit of a dance!

chevvron 12th Nov 2020 09:29

'Department' of Civil Aviation must mean Oz or NZ; England would be Ministry of Civil Aviation.

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 09:40

Very much in England......perhaps for export?

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 12:14

A clue...

Cowley photo credits: Control Tower website.

chevvron 12th Nov 2020 12:41

Langley???

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 13:28

I'm afraid not........

JENKINS 12th Nov 2020 14:02

Redhill perhaps?

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 14:15

[QUOTE=JENKINS;10924946]Redhill perhaps?[/QUOTE

Perhaps not. Now if you set course from Redhill heading NW you would be heading in the right direction. Alas today there is no trace of the airfield as such.

India Four Two 12th Nov 2020 16:26

CAM Hurricanes? Hanworth?

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 17:17

Not Hanworth, press on until you are just clear of The Home Counties. Follow the railway lines, or the A40. You are strictly VFR, no radio, stay out of cloud at all costs. You could be doing this several times a day.

zetec2 12th Nov 2020 18:43

That is Cowley airfield, I was born & brought up just down the road, Morris Motors on opposite side of the road where they had a production line of Tiger Moths & Horsa gliders which my Mother worked on, MPRD salvage yard couple of hundred yards off to the left, Henshaw flew from there I remember him bringing the AW52 in there and then flew it round over Cowley & Oxford. sadly it will have to be open house after that, rgds, Paul H, Bicester.

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Nov 2020 20:54

Spot on. Cowley - home to Number One Civilian Repair Unit: Hurricanes, Spitfires, Magisters and Masters. I've not been able to find any decent contemporary aerial views but I've highlighted the spot where I think the flying field was on the image below. Paul correct me if I'm wrong.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....d850ef1d6b.jpg

Cowley works 1946 - flying field top right.

India Four Two 13th Nov 2020 05:52

A 1945 photo on GE confirms the location of the aerodrome. The view is looking south:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....c76f493d47.png

The two aerodromes in the distance are Culham (HMS Hornbill) on the right and Mount Farm on the left.

I was confused by the gear-lever in the Last Spitfire image above!

OUAQUKGF Ops 13th Nov 2020 08:51

Zetec 2 mentioned the MPRD . At the risk of slight thread drift http://geoffroynon.co.uk/HAGproject-MPRD.html

zetec2 13th Nov 2020 09:31

The last image is good, the airfield is right in the centre, best picture I have seen of the site, suggest some time late 40's early 50's before built on, it was like that up until about 1954, I lived in one of the houses top right, St Lukes Road, Cowley, the road at front is the Garsington Road, with the speedway track centre left, the railway line - The Cowley Line was built (Lord Nuffield funding) to transport the Morris cars to the world and beyond, just in front of the square right centre is a bungalow and building, the small bulding became Johnsons cafe which supplied the workers both airfield and Morris Motors, it was still in existence until a couple of months ago, but development has taken over and now believe it has gone.

In India Four Two's picture the airfield is under the wording Cowley, where I lived is by the numbers B4495 bottom right, last road & houses yet to be built suggest that picture taken late 1938 , afraid Culham & Mount Farm way out of picture , Culham over by Abingdon some 15 plus miles away & Mount Farm same distance out to the left near Benson & Wallingford, still trying to orientate top picture ?.

Again my apologies for declaring open house but that really brought back some memories & just had to answer.

OUAQUKGF Ops 13th Nov 2020 09:43

It's a pleasure to hear your memories Paul, thanks a lot.

Asturias56 13th Nov 2020 13:02

here's an odd one - passed by ten's of thousands each day and completely forgotten

Not much clues to start with.
We will have to narrow it down a bit.
Not London City Airport by the looks of it.
