In that case I have no idea apart from maybe Middenmeer.
|
Looking at the line-up of Cubs I think it maybe an Army /KLM flying training school....
|
The Dutch drained The Fens of course! For this spot, starting from the seaward end, De Kooy at the time of the photograph?
|
Maybe Lelystad or Flevo.

I think Lelystad is the only city in the Netherlands named after a person (besides some Kings and Queens) Mr Lely was the engineer who engineered the Afsluitdijk and made the plans for the various big polders. The photo of the Helicopter was from somewhere on the ring dyke around Flevoland. Currently Lelystad Airport is being extended to form a relief airport for Schiphol (charter flights without onward connections) The field is -12ft AMSL https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....e4a1f422f.jpeg |
|
Also Dutch? (I see a Tjalk or Skutsje in the water) |
Eagle eyes - yes.
|
|
Schipol it is - and 1916.
I thought you would like it. |
Dook thanks! What Schiphol has grown! These hangars were on what now is the far North East corner of Schiphol. The U-bend in the Ringvaart is the place where Fort aan de Schiphol has been. It is now part of the foundation of the A9 highway bridge https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....5985d0c4f.jpeg I remember as being a kid visiting Schiphol and Aviodrome with my parents somewhere 1980. Then already there were plans to build a new Airport in the North Sea or in the Markermeer. Now Schiphol has doubled or tripled in flights. The Dutch have build 2 Maasvlaktes (harbours) into the sea and we have build the new Hongkong and Tokyo airports abroad but we still cannot decide upon a new airport for ourselves..... |
|
Must ask - Nederland again ?
I was stationed at Flugplatz Elmpt (Bruggen) flying Jaguars and it has a familiar look about it. |
After take-off on RW 27 we usually turned right and passed almost over it.
I am sure it is Venlo. |
Dook, Correct Venlo looking east towards the border. You have control again. SLB |
We sometimes got noise complaints from Venlo.
The sound of freedom ! http://i68.tinypic.com/2lljb5y.jpg |
Evening, dook. The distinctive outline of Hurn?
|
Good morning jensdad.
Bournemouth it is. Over to you. |
Thank you dook. In the 1980's I had a book about Air Traffic Control which had an aerodrome map of Hurn. Stuck in my mind for some reason.
Something a bit newer but still now historic... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....7dd8b511c5.jpg |
That's in the BA paint job "Dove" for the 2012 London Olympics I think.
Europe I would say. Could be Dusseldorf but for the background. edit: Didn't realise there were so many photos of that A319 around ! |
Affirmative to your first two observations. As you suspect, it isn't Dusseldorf, nor anywhere else in Germany.
|
Continuing.....
Found some more but with a wide blue band around the cowlings. |
Found another similar but in a foreign language - Croatian I think.
|
The photo's from my own collection so won't be on any web platforms. BA Airbuses are regular visitors at this airfield though, so there should be plenty of photos from more or less the same viewpoint, although maybe not for the last year or two.
Continue... :) |
Might it be Zagreb ?
|
Poppin' oot noo, so will answer any any suggestions at approx 1600Z
|
Ooof, you caught me just in time. It is indeed Zagreb. The terminal building that I took the snap from in 2015 has now closed, replaced with a shinier and less soulful one (as per one of my last challenges at La Palma).
The control is yours, Mr. d. |
Thank you kindly jensdad. I thought it would be a lot easier than it was.
Going back further: http://i65.tinypic.com/4r6q9w.jpg |
Eagle Farm, Queensland, Australia?
OH if correct. |
Good shooting Dora - your home territory. :ok:
Eagle Farm it is. Dora-9 has called OH. |
Another in a seemingly endless series of “Aerodromes I’ve been to”. In my day: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....631e73c3d.jpeg Now: https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....655809b83.jpeg |
Afternoon India.
Long shadow on the sign. I guess high latitude or early/late in the day. |
Newquay aka St Mawgan
|
I guess fairly low latitude as toilets on old photo have louvres and new building has large sun roof and airco standing outside. Driving right side of the road. So not a former British overseas. Disciplined- regulated country (clean kept, short grass, many signs etc.) so probably not Mediterranean and lots of other parts of the world. |
I agree with you about low latitude. I think we are probably looking east.
Looks like a fairly warm place as well. Not sure about driving on the right - what makes you think that ? |
2 Road signs right side of the road/entrance of parking. About regulated disciplined: I might have to come back on that as India’s car is on No parking area. SLB |
The right sign is facing to our left presumably towards traffic.
I therefore think the driving is on the left side of the road. If that's the case it would narrow things down nicely. Perhaps we'll find out from India. |
Interesting observations. Fairly low latitude, although not in the tropics. That rules out St. Mawgan unless there’s been a lot of Continental drift since I was last there! A fairly disciplined country, depending on your definition. This should resolve the steering-wheel issue: https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....09eefe99a.jpeg During my research, I have discovered that the first terminal picture actually post-dates my visit to the mystery aerodrome. There was a very unconventional check-in procedure when I was there, although I don’t remember it PS dook posted while I was composing. Eagle-eyed as befits a WIWOL. |
Cheers India.
Driving on the left now points me to Oz. |
Crikey, dook’s on the right track! Keep going until you nearly get to the black stump, mate! |
