Vulcan American Moth

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 11:13

Whatever that is - no.

RegDep 8th Aug 2011 11:16

No, wrong tail.

Whatever that is
It was a long shot :8

It was the 60 HP Le blond 5 cylinder radial engine that interested me…..

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 11:20

I have no idea which engine the challenge has.

RegDep 8th Aug 2011 11:21

So it is not Rearwin Junior, either?

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 11:29

Sadly not.

In view of that statement I am wondering if this is American? Certainly looks it, but Aerofiles normally provides some engine details. Or is this a machine that is offered with different engine options?

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 11:50

It is indeed American Ken, but it is, perhaps unusually, not in Aerofiles at all.

However, the one available photograph of it is on the web.

I was reluctant to post this one, but after Regs' last one I decided I would.

You know me - clues will be forthcoming soon. ;)

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 11:55

Early 1930's?

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 12:02

No date available, but you must be close.

One built, which is now archived in a certain American museum.

It's listed in the US aircraft registrations site.

The company was founded by three people and was based at San Leandro California.

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 12:09

Is it the Sierra BLW-2, from 1929?

The picture I have is identical, but it is in Aerofiles.

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 12:11

I did say it would be worthy of a round of applause.

:D:D:D:D

All yours. :ok:

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 12:13

PS - missed it in Aerofiles. :\

Off teaching for a while.

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 12:38

Thanks David. Nice one - when you said it wasn't in Aerofiles I went for my books - and found the same photo in one of them!

Here we go:

As you are at home, why not play this a bit different. Honestly, I don't even know where to start with this one. So what would you recommend me to do first?

I mean, I can list attributes that are pretty obvious, but what then? I have nothing printed out here.

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 13:59

Let's move this one along. American, in Aerofiles. Picture is there too.

Edit...our post's crossed Reg...but looks like we both had the same idea!

RegDep 8th Aug 2011 14:02

OK American, in Aerofiles. The tail fin looked a bit that way.

Engine: 9-cylinder radial, with sort of cowling. From 1923 - 1935…

Problem with Aerofiles is that the data is in pages containing quite many links to pictures, and once you have a hit, all pictures form that page come out as images in Giggle Image. Is there a work-around?

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 14:08

7 cyclinder radial...one aircraft built of this particular model (modified from an earlier model), appears in photo's both with and without the cowling.
1923-35 will cover it!

Not sure how you are using it - I just use the search facility in Aerofiles itself and is I bring up each page I used the "find'' to search the criteria I am looking for. I've never searched Aerofiles using Google.

Lightning Mate 8th Aug 2011 14:11

Artnoon Ken.

I'll keep you company also.

skytrain10 8th Aug 2011 14:15

Now there are two of you, another clue....just the one built, which was modified from a very similar looking variant. Pictures of both variants are in Aerofiles.
