Great looking airlines that are long gone...
Which airlines do you miss the most?
In the days of mergers, there aren't nearly as many great liveries left!! I miss IEA, Excalibur, Airworld, Orion..... Unique liveries and always great to see.... |
Yeah, IEA was one of the nicest on a summers day to photograph.
Ambassador was a 'short' lived livery. Hispania was really nice and bright - esp on the 2 757's. Futura was very similar to Hispania. Orion was quite nice. Air 2000's 1st livery was excellent for photos too. |
|
I liked B.E.A.'s last livery. Especially the Stottish Airways version from '69 to '74
|
Evansb, great shot spanning the times although when that paint job came out a frequent smarta$$ remark was something to the effect, "nice primer coat, when are you going to finish it"
I believe it also coincided with some fairly unusual F/A uniforms. The tail logo reminded me of the Utility symbol common on items in Britain in the late forties. ( I was just a very young nipper at the time ;)) |
CP Air employed the same ad agency that created the Coca-Cola swoosh. The red arrow in the half-circle is supposed to symbolize motion through the hemisphere. Here is a shot that captures a few by-gone liveries.

g/day everybody.i have to say i think the old BOAC livery was the best on a vc10 or a 747 it looked good.i also loved the channel a/ws livery as well.:):)
|
Spantax last livery i quite liked too...
and the final Dan-air livery was a great livery as was the last Britannia livery before they went all Tui-fied!!! NOw then...JMC - The marmite of liveries - Love it or hate it but it was unique!! |
How about Braniff with their aircraft colours selected by Mary Wells Lawrence? But Pan Am with their blue ball logo on the tail and name on the fuelage in huge letters has to be the most memorable.
|
Court Line,
British Eagle, Caledonian, Aer Lingus [the Dark Green scheme on their DC3s] |
evansb,
That brought back great memories - I was going to say 'Empress' for sure!# My old man took me onboard a CP Air stretch 8 one day and they looked so long until the 74 dwarfed them. The LGW pic - beyond the Airtours Comet - is that the old Midland colour scheme and a Donaldson Brit? Don't thinks it's Donaldson....Lloyd?? I give up! I must get a scanner - think I have a Sterling DC-6 pic from those days and a bit topical with their sad demise. More to the list: Kar Air What was the shortlived outfit that took over the Ambassador 73's? Saturn Capitol TIA Seaboard World Flying Tigers SAM - DC-6's and SE.210's at Gatwick I think I now have more photos of airlines that have gone than are still operating:{ |
Namib Air (the predecessor of Air Namibia).
The current 'logo' is crap. The original was tons better... *sigh* S. |

Air Rhodesia
Viscount in full livery.
Viscount with underside painted with anti missile. http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...e/0129283l.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...e/0129282l.jpg On a personal note ... Years ago flying back from JHB to a city called "Salisbury" in a country named "Rhodesia" in an Air Rhodesia Viscount just a couple of weeks after one had been taken out the sky by a Sam7, I was sat next to a very mouthy American. "Godamn place this Africa, only here because my company sent me, how you can sit on an old crate like this is beyond me" At this point all the cabin and nav lights go out. My American friend pushes attendant button. Air hostess arrives "Yes Sir may I help you ?" "Why have the godamn lights gone out, fuse blown I suppose ?" "No Sir it is a safety procedure to make us less vunerable to a terrorist guided missile attack" American looks at me "She takin' the p***" "No she is dead serious - they got one of these two weeks ago" Silence all the way home !! |
...loved the channel a/ws livery... http://www.airliners.net/photo/Continental-Airlines/Vickers-812-Viscount/0128846/M/ |
Pan Am, a 707 in Pan Am colours, nice.
Nick. |

Hey pigboat, that beautiful NORDAIR model is the unique stepped-cockpit, square wing-tipped C-46G.:ok: Here is one airline I do miss:

Just looking back through some of my old 70's LGW photo's, how about:
Southern Cross (anyone remember their 707?) Saber Air (Singapore) Donaldson Wardair Modern Air Transport ONA Pomair (Belgian DC-8/DC-6) APSA (of Peru, DC-8 that operated for Iberia/Aviaco) Interswede (DC-8) Spear Air (DC-8) Airlift International Great days...! |
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/k...-100C-FDJC.jpg
Wardair's first B747-100 C-FDJC By the way, the registration C-FDJC was picked in memory of Wardair's very first 'airliner', a DH Fox Moth also registered CF-DJC which Max bought from deHavilland Canada in the late 1940's. |

Agree with British Eagle. One from the obscure past : Treffield International. I also used to like the older Ethiopian scheme. BOAC as well.
In fact, I think almost any airline from the 1960s and 1970s looks good. But then maybe I am just showing my age. Today I think there's just too much white, too much junk in the form of dot.com titles, picture decals, lower case names and too many wavy lines. Some aircraft today look like fruit salad. I also think it can depend on the aircraft type. Almost any airline colours on a Constellation looks terrific, especially TWA. Any DC-4 or DC-6 from the 1950s the same. Today ? To be honest, I find it hard to fault the current British Airways scheme, but that sounds a bit boring ! |
rogerk,
Your story about the Viscount strikes a chord. Must say I think I prefer the original CAA livery, having seen them arriving new at SAY in 1956/7 (but not VP-YNI, don't know where that came from). Here's a link to another Brooklands-built aeroplane that regularly graced the same Southern African airfield, sometimes even circuit-bashing, on Thursday afternoons in late 1964. In this photo it's sporting a more striking colour scheme than in those early days, and finds itself at MAN: Photos: Vickers VC-10 1103 Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net [No old jokes about soccer clubs, please...] And the same one at GIG in 1972, now sporting a Lion Rampant, with a sister ship: Photos: Vickers VC-10 1103 Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net |

You really can't go wrong with the VC-10 colour schemes but I always liked the "Sunshine" effort on the East African 10s. Pity they never paid for them but it was a good way to travel back from Nairobi, especially if you knew the crew.
|
Anyone got that air to air shot of the DC-8 painted up by Calder? Was it called South American Tripper?
|
|
Great Photo
That Pacific Western B707 is rather special. I have always wondered if the 707 (in its various forms) was as good to fly as it looked like.
|
The 707 was a great machine to fly.
Actually, different versions, flew slightly differently. The best (for stability) were the last 707-320B/C... Straight pipe -320 were ok. I did not like the 707-120B as much. Not as stable. The 720B was a rocketship. Outstanding performance, but handled same as -120B... Only one plane I do prefer to the 707, it is the 747... Any pilot who has flown a 707 loves the 747, many similarities. But better... xxx :D Happy contrails |
My favourite BOAC scheme was:
http://www.vc10.net/History/Individu.../GARTA_air.jpg VC10, Comet or Britannia; no preference. (did I forget the B707?) My favourite BEA one was: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...g-aohj_arp.jpg but I have fond memories of: http://pics2.spoonfeeder.com/AieFTPF...LX4XNEWJW7.jpg |
Capital Connie
|
The old 1011 of TWA
http://widebodyaircraft.nl/l1011twa.jpg |
.. Or the old L1011 used by Gulf Air then...

DC-Ate's Captial Connie is totally captivating! Oh, how I yearn to hear the engines drone, and embrace the aroma of the stew's perfume as she passes by my aisle seat. I notice the seams on her nylons are straight up. On her return, I request a bourbon whiskey the same way. She winks, and then lights my cigarette with "Capital Airlines" matches. I ask when the snack will be served, and she replys, "Sooner than you think". I am near cata...
|
I had the good fortune to fly the Connie, not with Capital, but with Eastern. Being in the "front office", I could not partake as you describe! Great flying machine.
|
DC-ATE
You are a lucky man. I scrounged rides on Capitol, World Wide Canada, Trek (we handled them @ LGW in the early 60s) and Ace Freighters. Last one I got a ride on the 1049 of SAC out of MKC, was only a couple of touch&goes for the crew, but bloody magic:E:ok:
|
Yes, very lucky. As I've said elsewhere, I think I've flown the best of both piston-engine airliners, the Connie, and jet-engine airliners, the DC-8.
