The old Eastern Air Lines Duckhawk paintjob was one of the worst to maintain. It had Reds, Blues and whites and gold metalic tape to boot. Even the piston engine nacelles were painted. The also like to include advertising signage right on the fuselage like"
"FLY EASTERN AIR LINES NEW 13,000 HORSEPOWER SUPER C CONSTELLATIONS". What a mouthful and painted right next to to the pax entrance door. The name on the fuselage was always "Fly Eastern" or "Fly Eastern Air Lines". Allegedly Capt Rickenbacker would take an advertising tax write-off for the paint jobs on the aircraft. |
Mohawk's flight numbers were in the 1890-1899 series:

DC-Ate's Captial Connie is totally captivating! Oh, how I yearn to hear the engi.....
We all have our memories of rides on the Connie.
Mine is of a 36 hour flight rom Resolute Bay to Montreal on a Nordair 1049G in 1966, via Hall Beach, Fort Chimo and other exotic locales. At every route stop the hydraulic system needed close attention and replenishment, which needed plenty of ground time to rustle up the vast quantities of the 5606 fluid required. It was always known as the 'world's best three engine airliner', to which I might add '...without a functioning hydraulic system'. |
I rode a Capital Airlines Connie from Chicago to Washington in turbulent weather. Seated at the very aft end of the cabin, I swear I could see the fuselage twisting. Of course there was a lot rattling of the cupboard doors.
I was a white knuckle pax back then, even in smooth weather. |

I am enjoying this thread, thank-you.
The orange CP fleet of the 1970s - 1980s were known as "The Flying Mandarins." |

Court Line
Anyone got pics of the Court Line aircraft.
I know they had two Tristars, Halcayon Days and Halcayon Breeze, one was pink, the other Orange. I flew Luton - Ibiza on the Orange one, and back on the pink one in 1973 when I was a boy. The pink one had a problem on take-off, i.e. didn't make it into the air - exciting times. Eventually came back on a Caravelle as the Tristar was u/s. |

My last name bears an uncanny resemblance to the name of that company. :p
One day in Gander we taxiied past that pink 1011 and the F/O inquired if it was one of mine and did hairdressing run rampant in my family. ;) |
Gulf Aviation in Bahrain before they became Gulf Air. Any pictures around ?? Clint. The crew are in the cockpit eating sandwiches, of course. The ambient temperature is about +45. http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...r/AlAynDC3.jpg |
How much Mary Kay do I have to sell so I can "drive" that to the next distributor's meeting?

Re: the Channel Trident just a few slots above. Which airfield is that (looks like a runway 27L) ? Wouldn't have been Heathrow in those days (as they were then on 28L). Maybe an idea for the Which Aerodrome thread.
|
Well, GCC, the airport was known to have a few sheep grazing in the infield, and when required the herder and his sheep were escorted across taxiways by the airport authority. Sadly the airport is now closed.

i have to say i think the old BOAC livery was the best on a vc10 |
PanAm livery
I've always thought that the "huge letters" livery was designed by Knut Marsen of Airbus for their A310s - good lad on liveries, was Knut !:ok::ok:
|
I think the picture of the Channel Airways Trident was taken at Berlin Tempelhof back in the early 70s.
It should bring tears to my wife's eyes when I show her.........she was a wee young hostie with Channel at the time! :) |

Always thought the original Air 2000 livery was one of the most elegant and striking. Darned fine airline too! Seen here at Heraklion.

Air 2000 Livery
Agree with Scotbill re his Air 2000 comments, but suspect the pic must have been somewhere else other than Iraklion.... at least, I never went there in daylight with them !
|
I did though - although the first Air 2000 arrival was in the dark!
|
I never liked flying into Iraklion at night!
Another successful colour scheme. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...tion/GBNSF.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...tion/GBKRM.jpg |
Iraklion
Only place in my career that I ever did two go arounds ( at night of course ) and then diverted to Chania. Huge hills on left side with a 40kt wind coming right across the RW Windshear windshear ( I can still hear it shouting at me! ) One usually did a visual downwind RH for RW 27 although there was an offset VOR approach. Horrible place when windy ( and usually was ) |
GO was a neat airline....nice looking loGOs....did GO on it once to Prague....but now it's GOne
