Fiesler Fi.97
Does anyone have an idea about what those "antennae" along the aileron hinge line are for?

Kitbag 8th Dec 2011 05:42

Tracks, similar to Fowler type flaps allowing the entire trailing edge (including ailerons) to be extended increasing wing area by approx 20%. This, combined with HP leading edge slats, gave the aircraft the required STOL characteristics.

It's been OH too long and as I've got an SC to monitor, have a crack at this oldie!

Just stabbing with a blunt knife mate - French? Farman?

SincoTC 8th Dec 2011 21:21

Stab away mate; the answer is a short a nd sweetno :)

Noyade 8th Dec 2011 21:55

short
I'm Short on ideas, but if that's a clue, I'll try for the Short S.27, but where's the pusher engine?

SincoTC 8th Dec 2011 22:26

but where's the pusher engine?
About where the photographer was standing I would think

but if that's a clue
;) Not an S.27 mate but you're on the right tack :ok:

Noyade 9th Dec 2011 08:48

Dunno mate. To me the cockpit looks like a bathtub on the lower wing - beer image....

Bump it up a notch - S.32?

SincoTC 9th Dec 2011 09:12

Sorry mate, not the S.32

This was an "improved" S27 with a 50hp Gnome

Bumpity bump :hmm: !!

Noyade 9th Dec 2011 09:43

Is there room in your cockpit for a passenger? The S.35 with a 50 hp gnome?

:(

Much confusion exists over the identities and proper designations of these modified S.27s because each of them received multiple, uncoordinated identification numbers under various numbering systems.

SincoTC 9th Dec 2011 09:50

I think that's near enough mate :D

I have it as the Short S.34 / S.35 of 1911

Short S.34 / S.35

You can see the dark, raised pointed end of the "cockpit" in the picture at the top of the linked page, the nacelle is quite long!

Noyade has control (or is it too near bedtime??) I'm in and out of the workshop today and eveyone else seems to have gone :{

Noyade 9th Dec 2011 09:58

Thanks Trevor, but I just bludgeoned my way through that. Open house. So there's a "gap" between the cockpit shell and the engine?

SincoTC 9th Dec 2011 10:15

So there's a "gap" between the cockpit shell and the engine?
Yes, the raised dark pointed aft end of the nacelle in my image is in fact a petrol tank; the engine bearers seem to be part of the base of the tank and anchor the end of the crankshaft just above the trailing edge of the lower wing with the rotating cylinders aft of the propeller!

Noyade has declared Open House Sleep well mate :ok:

Go figure this one:

MReyn24050 10th Dec 2011 09:51

No takers? The aircraft is the Rutan Model 202 Boomerang. A rather unique aircraft.

evansb 10th Dec 2011 12:10

Mel is spot on:ok: The Rutan Boomerang is a one-off. All composite asymmetric 5-place, and flown from the right seat. The cabin is pressurized for your comfort. Genius designer Burt Rutan has retired. Your turn.

MReyn24050 10th Dec 2011 12:54

Thanks Bri. Here is the next aircraft have come a long way since this one:-
