Gentlemen,

I have the saddest of all news. I have received the following personal e-mail.

It is possible that I am the only one who knew RegDep by his real name Heikki. He loved to call himself "your wingman"

Dear friend of my beloved partner who has unexpectedly passed away today. I was the one who had forwarded you the airplane picture some months ago. So I happened to have your email. I knew that he has enjoyed so much being connected with you, he had such a lot of respect for you and really saw you as his good friend. Wishing you all the best and please keep him in good memory. If you would like to know more, please just contact me. Anja-Christina Albert

I found this object on Tentsmuir beach below the high water line close to RAF Leuchars recently. Looking at the size and shape, I think perhaps it's a front fuselage section between the cockpit and nosecone of a single seat jet fighter? Or maybe it's not aviation related at all? I have an idea what it might be but before I share my thoughts I would be interested in other opinions.

Looks like a 40 gal oil drum. How big is it?

aviate1138 25th Oct 2011 07:42

Kitbag has my vote but I will say 45 Gallons! :)

Porrohman 25th Oct 2011 11:20

The two ends of the object seem to be different sizes which to me indicated a streamlined shape. It appears to be oval in cross section and it doesn't seem to be symmetrical so I thought that ruled out it being an oil drum or a mine. It's hard to say what the total size is as half the object is buried in the sand but the razor shells in the photos should give some idea of scale. The top surface is perhaps 4 feet long and it's about 2 feet across at the widest end. Unfortunately I didn't have a measuring tape with me so these are just guesses. It was just a chance find whilst I was walking along the beach.

Porrohman 26th Oct 2011 18:39

No more guesses? Well, I thought it might be the front fuselage of a Vampire F3; the part between the cockpit and the nose-cone but with most of the top hatch covers shattered and missing. Then again, maybe it's not aviation related at all.

If it hasn't disappeared back into the shifting sands on Tentsmuir beach you can find it, when the tide is out, about half a mile North East of the end of the runway at Leuchars.

I have nothing else to hand so - open house...
