Well, the Waco wasn't there when I visited in 2003, but I saw it four years later at the Hamburg "Airport Days," so I presume it's a flyer. Neither was the jump jet, so maybe that arrived some years after my visit-after all, it's nearly ten years since I went there. Perhaps time for a return visit! Oh and anyone else visiting Oberschleissheim should take in the Super Connie, DC-3 and JU-52 at Munich airport (a few stops further down the railway line that goes through-and stops at-OberS, but go there in the morning, because, if it's a sunny day, you won't be able to take a "clean" shot of the Connie: ScanImage11 618 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Your photo 023 - The Curtiss P-6E Hawk - in that livery (the snow owl insignia) is the prettiest biplane ever built. It was rebuilt from a wreck 50 years ago by students at Purdue University under the direction of Prof. Ernest R. Blatchley - I know him well. He intended to make it airworthy, but that would have meant replacing the lower longerons (steel tubing) in the fuselage, and there wasn't the budget for that. The engine is in excellent condition, although missing the seals and gaskets needed to make it runnable. :ok: |

Classic Air Force, Newquay
Hi all,
New museum on the block down in Cornwall is the Classic Air Force at Newquay Airport (RAF St Mawgan in old money). We are located in the old Nimrod deep servicing facility, and we are based around the Air Atlantique fleet of classic aircraft, relocated from Coventry, with both static and flying exhibits. If you are in the area, please come in and visit, for 2 reasons. One, we need visitors! Two, we need feedback from people who know what makes a good aviation museum. We are a new operation, and cannot easily draw on the experience built up by the Coventry team due to the distance. Apologies if this comes across as a sell. It is, kind of, but Cornwall has been a classic aviation desert for years and now that we have something going on, I'm going to push it. Best regards, Subsunk. |

The a/c identified as a "CT-39A" at Hill AFB is - judging from the "slipper" tank midspan on the wing and the rectangular cabin windows - actually a Lockheed VC-140B JetStar. It looks like a twin to the one in the VIP hangar at Wright-Patt AF museum. BTW - misidentification is not terribly uncommon at some museums. The Travis AFB museum has a centrifugal-flow jet engine they called a J-33 IIRC. My few minutes' inspection of it told me it was a GE I-A (or perhaps I-16), a very early US jet from 1942-43. |
Yesterday I was in Berlin, the Technical Museum. And one month ago in Sinsheim to see the concorde. Unfortunately I have no picture to upload here so far.

Its definately a Jetstar and not Saberliner. Notice the four (4) engines. Only the first two prototypes had twin engines (Bristol Siddeley Orpheus). And besides that...it looks completely different and its more than twice the size! |
I am off to Alicante, Spain next month; can anyone recommend a nearby aircraft museum to visit in the area?

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum
If you have never ventured to this magnificent museum I would strongly recommend that you do. Set on a corner of the original Tangmere Airfield it has grown since its early days of the 80's and is now a really superb example of preserving the memory of the Battle of Britain, and of the heroes that flew from there. Set quite close to Chichester it is a must to see. The exhibits are kept in a condition that is a credit to everyone charged with keeping them in pristine condition. A joy to behold. The history it tells is must to see.
About Tangmere | Tangmere Museum It closes each December and January so that a great mixture of skilled and unskilled volunteers can keep the museum growing and kept up to the high standard they set to make it one of the best aviation museums I have ever seen. It opens again in February and is well worth a visit. The link above will tell you all you want to know about this historic airfield. |
wow! as my hobby has always been a modelling and collecting plane models I really mad of everything connected with this very topic, in my native town I attended almost every museum, trying to enlarge my knowledge in aircraft topic!)))

Have there been any additional announcement regarding the outcome of this tread? It seems to me that the thoroughly aim for the postings did run off quite early, making it uneasy to surf through for pictures?
Additional, I would like to make a mention wich have become a mantra to me on the infamous FB: Though it's generally known that a picture tells more than thousand word, a simple comment attached to any picture will avoid 1000 questions! |
