Flying Legends - Saturday pics
Ok then. After some discussion have gone through Saturday's pics. But first we'll start off with a shot that isn't mine - it's one sent to me by ajduf of the Fly Navy Heritage Trust, which I think is a perfect way to remember Bill and Neil. RIP guys.

Fantastic Pics Damien. Greatly apreciate being able to see them. We're not likely to see anything like your pic 'fls19' down under.
A question about the Soviet aircraft. I think '28' is the Lavochkin La-9 recently restored in NZ. What is the other shown in 'fls11' ? Marking looks like '27'. Is that a French registration mark ?

"27" is a Yak 3 owned by M Capel. The other is indeed the Lavochkin, described by the commentator (am I mistaken or were those the dulcet and highly knowledgeable tones of James Gilbert?) as sounding rather agricultural!
We were also fortunate enough to see Lufthansa's Ju-52 flying with the Salis example. Wonderful!

There was a Ju52 ferried through here some years ago for a North American tour celebrating the 75th? anniversary of Lufthansa. Wondered if it was the same machine.

The Lufthansa Ju-52 is a genuine Junkers (I believe the Salis aircraft is CASA built) and has a fantastic history - spent many years in the US owned by Martin Caidin before returning to Europe in the mid-80s - and had been back across the Pond since, presumably when you saw it. Think it has P&W engines though as spares for the appropriate BMWs are apparently hard to come by!

The only trouble with the ever-increasing quality of your output, Damien, is that you have put even the lovely shots of yours we are publishing in General Aviation in the shade.
Nice to see that tribute to the RNHF crew and the Firefly. My first published air-to-air was of this machine, and I got to know regular Firefly pilot and Heron Flight/RNHF 'boss' John Beattie very well. I tried endlessly to blag a ride in the Firefly, but John put me off in the end. "You've no controls in the looker's seat," he said, "you have to trust completely the guy up front - and it stinks of gas all the time".
Happily, I did get a ride in the Swordfish instead. Like a giant, iron Tiger Moth - lovely.
