A1 Memorials

During the 1960s there was, at the edge of the A1, on the western side, a memorial pillar to a bomber crew who had come down on the spot
during WW2. I think that it was just north of Stamford. I've looked recently on drives north but could not find it again so I suppose that that it was removed during road widening.
Any details anyone? Who, where and what?

Big Jok, I believe you are thinking of a monument to French prisoners of war from Napoleon's time. It was located a few yards north of the Norman Cross roundabout, now gone, on the west side of the A1. You'll find the full story at

I suspect that's correct. The memorial was a pillar with an eagle perched on the top (so quite easy to mistake for an American-style eagle) and was by the old A15/A1 roundabout at Norman Cross, about 10 miles south of Stamford. Many a time I used to use that roundabout to nip past slow trucks in my little MG Midget on the way back up to Cranwell. Unfortunately the site was vandalised and the eagle was, I understand, stolen about 10 years ago?
