Yes it was indeed, thanks you very much for reminding me. He could handle a Skyvan like no other, had an illustrious war record, and was an amusing and interesting character.

I have seen some Shorts Skyvan aircraft advertised or described as being version Skyvan "3-300" or "3A-300".

Since the only certified Skyvan versions are 3-100 and 3-200, what is a 3-300? Are they some sort of uncertified modification?

Also, what is a Skyvan "3-400"? Is this a de-militarised 3M-400? Again, this does not appear to be a certified version, how is it allowed to fly?

Looks like a goat to me! i carried many in Oman (best behaved were those in a large cardboard box with four holes for legs and top loosely tied!!) Also transported several Oryx and a couple of (very grumpy) mountain lions. For the technical we had all our "Vans" re-engined with Garrett 331-6 (instead of the old -2). This was a great performance improvement. Happy days!

Shorts had a rather confusing series of "variant" descriptors (also used on the 330 and 360) where a suffix indicated the certification requirements a given aircraft was intended for. From memory, "200" indicated a UK-certificated aircraft, "100" was an FAA-certificated one, etc. Alas, I don't recall which jurisdictions "300" and "400" related to.

This led to situations where, for example, a 360 intended for a US customer could be a Series 300, but a Variant 100. I suspect something similar is what's being described for the Skyvan, and the 100/200/400 refer to the intended certification authority and not the aircraft series.

If I remember rightly, there was a SC7 version called the Skyliner, which was just a Skyvan with a door on the port side instead of (as well as?) the lifting rear door, and 19 seats. Gulf Air had one, I think.

It was the precursor to the bigger 330, I guess.

Perhaps this was the -300 version?

Two of these were introduced at Glasgow to replace BEAs Heron Mk 1s.

I flew to and from Islay on a BEA (or where they British Airways by then?) Skyvan. Would be mid-seventies.

Yes, at least one of the Skyliners was in BA colours by May 1974, a month after the merger.

Regular passengers on the Highlands and Islands routes that it served used to travel with their own earplugs.

Our Skyvan went AOG in Glasgow. We pax had an unscheduled night stop in a Hotel in Port Ellen where I experienced the unedifying experience of being propositioned in the urinals by an inebriated local. There was a wonderful fug in the crowded bar and yes Chevvron the Malt was flowing freely. I spied the gentleman from whom I had recently fled sitting atop a very tall wooden bar stool, wearing a tam-o-shanter, fag hanging from his lips clasping a full glass of whisky and swaying backwards and forwards with increasing velocity. Inevitably he lent too far back and encountering a deep stall the whole shooting match crashed to the floor without a drop of malt being spilled nor the fag leaving his lips. And there he lay semi conscious, clasping his glass, prone on his back ignored by all around him. I rather dreaded coming down for breakfast but thank God he was, by then, not to be found.
