Bae 146 at Carlisle
First noted a Dan-Air 146, one of the original small series 100 ones, in the early 1980s at, of all places, Palma. Did they run them economically on holiday charters as well ? I noticed it a couple of hours later at Gatwick, that seemed a decidedly odd route for a 146.

The 146 -100 series positioned from Newcastle to Teesside on Friday evenings and operated various holiday routes from Teesside to the Mediterranean throughout the weekend. It then positioned back to Newcastle in time for the Monday morning scheduled services. It also operated Mediterranean flights from Gatwick (including Palma).
One great waste of time which was tried for a very short period was a Glasgow Palma. They limited the passengers to 70 (from 89 on the 100) so that we could get the fuel on. That didn't last long.
Many thanks for all the suggestions particularly from Duchess Driver. I got a photo from the Solway Aviation Museum through the General Manager at Carlisle Airport👍

I think everyone knows that! However it sparked interest in Dan air, his (or her) career and the 146! Would you have been happier with no responses or 100x “no, sorry wasn’t a carlisle that day”!!!
Ps quemerford the mme 146 went Pmi, alc, ibz, jer and gro/Bcn in its heigh day!
Blimey! The OP posed an obtuse question that probably didn't have many conduits to successfully be answered, other posters suggested avenues of possibility and even searched various databases without success. One suggested contacting the local newspaper (I'd have suggested this had it not already been done so). The OP used this route and it led them to success. Hurrah!
Having used Dan Air way too many times over the years, plus seeing them all the time at Gatwick and other (usually) European airports, I for one am interested in this thread. The OP owes no-one anything apart from a thankyou perhaps and they have done that. I'd still like to see the photo(s) ;-)

Jeee guys, get a life,
this is no way to end this nice thread in a quarrel.
Although we could not help him out directly it is clear that Grumpy has thanked us for our suggestions.
And I personally would like it if Grumpy can bring this thread to a closure by posting the photo
( if he is allowed by copyrights etc.)

Come on folks!!!
I was really humbled by the response to my request by the interest shown. It opened (in my opinion) some interesting comments about the past which by being part of pprune I assume we have a common interest.
I found the photo with suggestions from others and I am grateful as the day in question was almost 35 years ago. It is a relatively uninteresting picture but means something to me.
I will post the picture if the owner gives me the necessary permission. May take a day or two!
Enjoy your Sunday!!

I've had the need to go from London to various business meetings in this north Cumbria part of the world, it really is an inconvenient place to get to. Whitehaven is the worst, no practical train service which makes you tend to go by car, ending up taking a day each way just for the journey. Carlisle did at least have the London train, but that again is a long journey. Day return business trips are quite impractical. Newcastle airport is too far away. I always felt there must be the market for a London service from Carlisle. A 146 would have been too big, but I believe Scot Airways were looking at a Dornier 328 from London City; their 35 seater seemed to be the most practical.
Long ago Autair had a go with an HS748 at Luton-Blackpool-Carlisle-Dundee, linking three (possibly four) of the least likely airports in the country. Inevitably that didn't work out.
Colleague asked me the nearest airport to Whitehaven, served from London. I said Ronaldsway, showed him Google Maps said it was 50 miles away. Being slightly geographically illiterate, he then got timings from the travel agent until I forced him to look it up on the map ! I really should have let him go and book a rental car . With binoculars you can just about see an aircraft on approach there from the Whitehaven shoreline.

I think he was being gracious since no-one really helped.
As a pimple faced lad I was a spotter at Newcastle late 70’s early 80’s and remember the introduction of the Dan Air 146. Up until then we had the 1-11s, 748’s as regulars and 727’s as crew trainers. Comets would appear in the circuit as well but very infrequently. If memory serves, there was a Twin Otter in Dan Air Colours for a while.
Those were the days when the Maintenance area was “wide open” and remember once wandering around a Dan Air 1-11 in the hangar (G-ATPJ?) without much hassle.
The 146 will always have a special place in my heart, having seen the prototype on the ground at Hatfield not long after it was rolled out my mates were well envious. It was also the first aircraft I got to sit on the jump seat for (Newcastle - Glasgow - Amsterdam) with UKay and somewhere have pictures. It was that flight that made me consider the career change that led me to where I am now.
I try to find pictures of the aircraft I fly on the web - but thankfully this is much easier today as there are many more photographers about.
