For some reason the German ambassador to London, who travelled to/from work on the tube and by bus, complained about these ads on London Transport:

He should think himself lucky. If his lot had won he wouldn't be an ambassador enjoying the privilege of travelling the underground amongst all his other perks and vast stipend. Ungrateful oik!!!
Be lucky

The same advertising campaign that stated that their beers were "like the Luftwaffe - downed all over England".

The campaign also claimed that "Rear gunners drink lager shandy". This tag-line upset certain sections of the community, who made an official complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency. The complaint was rejected with the ASA saying that "the complaints had been fuelled by "overzealous" political correctness".

In 1981 the World Gliding Championships were held at Paderborn. Evidence of rounding waypoints was by photography, and the organisers wanted good, consistent air to ground pictures of all their chosen points. RAFG offered to provide these free, and did so; they also included a small number of extra water features in the Ruhr. These were added to the official list (Germans do have a sense of humour).

Appropriately, an RAF Phantom pilot in his day job was World Champion.
