QUESTION FOR THE MODERATORS
When that somewhat puerile 'Us moderators have gone to the pub' caption comes up in response to sending a post, what happenes to that post? Is it saved somewhere or lost in cyberspace? The reason I ask is that I replied to a topic at length - only to find that it had vanished into thin air after that 'Gone to the pub' page had gone.

Happened to me in this forum too. I opened a new window and continued surfing in that, went back to the prune one, pressed BACK on Explorer, where my text had been saved. I tried again 30 mins later and it went through ok. Damned annoying though, some form of warning would be great.

As long as you don't shut down the browser window it should be preserved to repost Beagle.

Well it wasn't. I composed off-line, then clicked 'add reply'. When PPRuNe re-opened, the 'Gone to the pub' caption came up - I clicked 'back' and the text had vanished.
Infuriating - and what actually was the reason for the site going down this time? It seems to be happening more and more often........

My apologies for the frustration Beagle.
The site was shut around 10pm last night to sort out some membership file problems. 38,000 people visited the site over the last 24 hours and there is simply no 'quiet' time anymore to do these things. It only appears to happen more often because we have traditionally got up at 3 in the morning to do the work.
We now find in excess of 250 people using the site at these times so we now switch off at more civilised hours. It's a no win situation so if we going to get flak we might as well do it at times were we can have some semblance of a normal life - thus the puerile notice. We aren't at the pub - we are working on the maintenance to keep a huge site running.
For a little perspective It is 300 times more busy than the internet site of your favoured low cost purveyor of flights to FRA.
After 6 years of doing it in the middle of the night we're not one penny better off so for the first time European readers are simply experiencing what those in other time zones always have.
We're sorry your work was lost - we do understand. We've lost the entire site 3 times in the past. Back up is the key so If you do favour creating your longer posts off -line then all I can suggest is taking advantage of the save and other facilies of a word processor or text editor and then pasting into a live submit box.

Thanks for your comprehensive and measured reply, Rob. I guess that I'll have to use the insurance of 'cut and paste' from Word if I compose off-line!
The success of PPRuNe has been phenomenal and those who haven't even stumped up for a badge should feel ashamed for their lack of financial support. This is the best source of aviation news, views and comment that there is and long may it continue to be!
Incidentally, those nice folk at my favourite low-cost STN-FRA airline (not the one that flies to where-the-hell-is-Hahn!!) were kind enough to postpone my planned New Year flight at my request for just a small admin fee - so instead of being over in FRA with my beloved I'm sulking here with the 'flu and my trusty Dell!! Which is probably why I was a bit miffed when my post was dematerialised by the forces of darkness this morning!!

Mrs Towers always keeps an eye out for a distinguised miltary gent with a PPRuNe badge and a gleam in his eye on the FRA flights.
If approached by a dark haired Irish cabin chief flash your badge and use the phrase that pays: "I like the 146 because.............."

Ah-hah! I'll have to keep my eyes open, although the description does ring a bell. The cabin crew on those flights are invariably friendly and very professional and streets ahead of the ice maidens and gel-haired pretty boys of a certain German airline: "You vill choose either ein Schinkenbroetchen oder ein Kaesebroetchen. You vill then eat it. Schnell"
Was it Mrs Towers who did the Children in Need draw on the UK2294 on 16 Nov this year??

As a general rule, without exception in fact, I always highlight the page I have written, right click and copy before I make ANY attempt to post. Then if it all goes wrong, with a one man visit to the pub! <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> Or a go slow, or other annoyance which can lose all that you have written - you have it saved.
But if you have a reasonable tool bar on your browser you will have an edit feature. I use this too to put stuff into Word and then cut and paste back into PPRuNe when all the drinkin's done - simple innit? <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0"> <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

I'm afraid that caption was created by our resident Irish administrator while Danny was staying over a couple of weeks ago.
Danny fell under his baleful influence and even spent two days using one of those dreaded PC's instead of a Mac.

I just suggested it as a more likely version of events that that awfully stuffy message that was there previously.
And he didn't cry. His problems with using a PC were mostly induced by the Sawbo Pub Crawl experience.
And he watched all my DVD's...
And DIDN'T clean the kitchen, the usual requirement of most houseguests who stay in Hamrah's Bijou Palace.
