This went through several iterations of name. Started in the 1950s as Silver City Airways, operating from Lydd to Le Touquet, while a competitive servce was started by Freddie Laker's original company Air Charter's as subsidiary Channel Air Bridge from Southend to Calais and Ostend. Both later expanded elsewhere as well. Both had the Bristol Freighter as their mainstream fleet, but Laker then did some home-made rebuilds of DC4s as the Carvair.

The two carriers got merged up, along with several other airlines, into British United Airways, and the combined operation was branded as such, then the car services was renamed as British United Air Ferries (BUAF), and the Cravars covered both departure points. The market fell away substantially each year as new car-ferry ships came into service, and finally the operation was sold off as British Air Ferries (BAF), which ultimately got out of the cross-channel business altogether and went on to be a major ACMI charter operator.

Air Jet

EI-BUD mentioned Air Jet....

Eventually swallowed up into TNT along with most of Jet Services International....

Worked for them for a few years after thinking that F27's were a step up from B99's at TAT, which is another to add to the list....Should have stayed put, as I was still flogging around on the F27 when my mates were working on shiny, newish F28's and, I believe, but I'm open to correction here, wearing shiny, newish BA uniforms....

TAT was certainly a BA franchisee for a while, I did a Brussels-Nice roundtrip with them once, I don’t think the F28s were so shiny then.

But not forgotten - because they did my first ever flight, and so, having started the fascination, got me into all this in the first place.

Vickers Viscount 700 G-AMOO Liverpool to Isle of Man. About 20 minutes airborne (almost visible from one another on a clear day). Four engines ...... !

Worked in SIN in the early nineties, I remember Air Swazi Cargo which used to fly betwegen SIN and MTS, Manzini in Swaziland. This routing was neccessary to get around the embarago which was in force against South Africa at the time.

This flight was operated back-to-back with the Air Hong Kong (pre CX), some of the load was transloaded in SIN and that was how South Africa got its VCRs in the bad old days.

Air Swazi Cargo - a/c were 3d-ASC and ASB. Two letter airline code was GK.

Air Hong Kong operated VR-HKK and HKL and if I am not mistaken HKG as well. Two letter code was LD and airline number was 288.

thrubwell,
As I guess you will be aware, Cambrian and Northeast together with BOAC and BEA merged to form British Airways in 1974.

and another one....

I recall flying on holiday to Spain in the 80's with a company called Orion Airways, a B 737 I think. Don't think that operates now.

Orion was absorbed by Britannia in 1988. Another UK charter airline, Paramount (MD80's), started operating in May1987 and went bust in 1989.
