Oh blimey - there are loads that seem to fit! Give it one more try and I'll tell you, whilst admitting that both Meteor and Lightning fitted the bill.

Sorry no, this one is a British aircraft. If you do the Observer AZED, according to Inspector Morse the best crossword in the world, I stole this from today's Clue 20 Down.

If so glad you said it was a British aircraft - the younger generation may only be aware of the F18 of the same name.
