The headgear and clothing suggests very much Russian.

If it is Russian, then how about a Poliparkov?

However, I can't find a pic with that exhaust system.

The aircraft in the photograph is a Polikarpov, as you say. It is a U-2VS fitted with a trial silencer system.
You have control David.

Interesting and intriguing engine. The engine appears to be slim with lower air intake which would indicate a turboprop but I do not think it is a PT6, possibly a Garrett AiResearch TPE331

Correct engine Mel.

I'm not sure what Bri means by the Interceptor 400.

It is the Garrett AiResearch Turbo Comanche 400.

Therefore I feel it fair to award it 50/50 to both of you, but I think Brian is closest.

Thanks David, I agree Bri's choice of aircraft:-
Interceptor 400 Pirep

although not the actual aircraft was certainly far closer than guessing the engine type.

The engine is a Pratt & Witney XT57 installed in the nose of a C-124C Globemaster II.

Not the Wibault 12 Sirocco Bri. However, a very similar aircraft except that this series of aircraft were not fighters but for recce purposes.
