Which Aerodrome Mk III
try this
A guess at Down Ampney,
PS - Oldpax
I was also in a Shackleton doing that, and although no T shirt my post flight bollocking was heard by most of the rest of the Squadron

I have seen Shackeltons do that!In fact I have been in a shackelton doing it!
Not Down Ampney either
Dook? He was reduced to the ranks and post zeroed early in November I think and has hardly been seen since. Probably on here under a different name I suspect
here are some of those who served there............

This is not Spanhoe but some people did serve at both I believe - I am not sure about these particular individuals
The base is still active
here are some more cheerful souls

We are certainly traveling the highways & byways of England today - regretfully not Barkston Heath either
This place is a lot more accessible..................

You are correct Jenkins - the 315th served here - but just about everywhere else as well as far as I can see
It's active but I think it's a while since there were any fixed wing operations - people may (or may not) come in by helicopter - I don't know.
Just realised this looks like RNAS Culdrose - but it isn't..............

Hurrah!!! Good shot Auxtank
Yes, right on the M4 and still quite a busy place some days even now

Thanks. It was Jenkins's clue about the 315th previous addresses that clinched it.
That GE pic above (with the Motorway End sign on the gate) is the 'secret junction'.
Drive up there and very quickly some rather serious looking chaps will appear to see if they can help you.
Having nothing prepared...

But I have something. Apparently disused, on the site of an earlier field. The original field, conceived as a decent plan, suffered an air raid which would have daunted the spirit of Section Officer Harvey, and failed due mostly to the intransigence of the contemporary favourite uncle. Amazing what one learns from Sunday newspapers.
And I am sticking with Spanhoe!

Not terribly secret given the large signs as you drive from the Bristol direction - and from the air it stands out like... anything. But I heard they were very keen to discourage passers-by driving up to the gate in the picture
You can see the guard tower in the top picture above just to the right of the woods - I presume they have sensors on the road as well. Someone told me it was used as a Cruise Missile deployment location out of Greenham but they are still all top secret other than "Salisbury Plain" where a close friend ran into a deployment one night in the '80's - he claimed he was on a rally but we all suspect he was out dogging.
