I might have misled you with an earlier answer re Military and civilian.
On further reading, it wasn't used for civilian flights - i.e. only military aircraft here, but it was run by civilians - hence not looking military.

USAAF aircraft in Africa including Curtiss fighters: surely something to do with Operation Torch. Three invasion landing areas, in Morocco and Algeria. the most Easterly was around Algiers. How about Maison Blanche, which was Algiers' civil airport and became a major military base?
