Here is a read only link to the Aerodrome Database - WhichAerodrome.xlsx. Up to date as of 1/5/2019. Catching up slowly - up to May 2019 now (Mar 2020).

Here are some "rules" for Which Aerodrome. These are based upon the original suggestions from the very first thread, and have a few additions. Also please be patient as when you are active others may be asleep.
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
  • The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
  • That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open. Anyone may then post the next challenge.
  • If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 48 hours, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on line.
  • When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 48 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.
  • If Open House is declared, regular posters should not jump in immediately, but time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location as they may have some good images.
  • There will only be one challenge running at a time.
  • Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth, Zoom Earth or any other search engine, pics
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.
  • Personal photos are acceptable as they show the aerodrome as it is now.
  • When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
  • Please don't delete your posts, let everyone see your successes, failures and challenges.
Anyone can edit it so long as they have been here for 90 days with 90 posts. Let's get consensus before changing and not go crazy Thanks to Self Loading Bear for suggesting that we use a wiki. Which Aerodrome I Which Aerodrome II nvubu.

Cockatoo Island is in Yampi Sound, in West Australia's north. Not to be confused with the one in Sydney Harbour! Try 16 05 46S 126 36 40E.

Time for a clue:

The same location, but from the other side of the road - there are two aerodromes.

Croydon used to have two aerodromes separated by a public road, but...

Cranwell has a north and south airfield with a public road running between them.

Looks similar to Plough Lane to me, but if it's Hamble, wasn't there a railway line somewhere?
Course Manston is another place with effectively two airfields separated by a public road; not sure about Sealand; was there a road between north and south airfields?

Not Hamble
Not Manston or Sealand
Plough Lane isn't an aerodrome, but a road, so if this is Plough Lane, the aerodromes would be...

My next clue would be:

Looks like a new barn in the the farm buildings

Correct - in the 2nd picture, Waddon is this side of the road and Beddington is on the far side with New Barn Farm in the middle.

TheiC has control.

Beddington opened in 1915, Waddon in January 1918, with Croydon coming into existance in 29 March 1920. Plough Lane, New Barn Farm and the hangers and offices in the centre were only demolished in 1928

Apologies,

In the Lake District with very limited internet, and rather like Cherie Blair without her 'contraceptive equipment' I haven't got my aerodrome equipment to hand, so open house please...

I'll take advantage of the Open House. I'm sure this aerodrome has been done before, but I couldn't resist the appropriate seasonality of this picture.

I can't find any ICAO reference to the non-standard lights

Here's a clue: Taken today at 0810 local. Sunrise was 0850.

Thought I'd google "control tower christmas lights" and top of the shop:

Edmonton City Centre Airport.

nvubu,

That's the one - CYXD, Edmonton City and previously Edmonton Muni. A mere shadow of its former self, with the main runway having been ripped up and only one shortened runway left.

You have control.

Thank you.

Here's the next aerodrome - a nice easy one - a very big clue is right in front of you. Suprised to find that this no longer exists.

Seen this pic before; I think it's at Victoria Falls. Not sure if the airfield has a different name.

OH if correct.

It is the original Victoria Falls Airport - Sprayview Airport, sadly no more. It was called Victoria Falls for scheduled flights.

Only 2km from the falls, fantastic for the flight over the falls.

olympus has declared Open House
