Jesselton

Great to see the word Jesselton here (5537 and 5338 ) Always felt the airfield name should never have been changed. Does anyone happen to know why it was called Jesselton? The best I can do is once seeing an old photograph of a group off expatriate Malayan government civil servants and one of them was named Jessel.

Kota Kinabalu, the old colonial name being Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah state in Malaysia. It was named after the Vice Chairman of the British North Borneo Company, Sir Charles Jessel. I believe it is still referred to as "Jesselton Airport".

Twentyfour hours have elapsed since your last response,Olympus.
That was either a very long walk with the dogs or a very indulgent lunch!
I am sure everyone must be Seething by now.

Sorry not to have responded; I was waiting for the excursion to Jesselton to return.

Not Seething, Diss, Eye, Horham or Kota Kinabalu.

It's in Suffolk but a further clue is perhaps necessary to narrow it down.

Tha caption of the photo says that the aircraft are Liberators of 487th BG, which should give it away.

Very sorry that I wasn't able to reply (I would have declare OH) but had to rush mother-in-law to A&E at the eye hospital on Friday morning and have only just got back to my computer.
