Pre take-off checks

As I taxy out, I complete the pre take-off checks from memory. These are now second nature. Trim: Set for take-off. Airbrakes: In and locked. Anti-ice/rain dispersal: Off. Autopilot: Set up. Fuel: Transfer switch on, ventral tank feeding. Flaps: Up and indicating up...etc

Did anyone hear Ms.Leeming make a very heart felt comment about Eric on the programme about the real India the week before last. She clearly felt very deeply about him. Sad end to an old friend from The Towers. We'll drink a toast to absent friends at the 50th anniversary of 94 passing out to you and others.

CM - no, as programme clashes with something SWMBO wants to watch. What did she say?

It was obviously filmed last year, and she was asked about her personal life with a view to perhaps settling in India. She said that "the love of her life" (unquote) was being buried today and was visibly upset. I didn't make the funeral and guessed she didn't either because she was out in India. Should still be available on Iplayer. She could only have been talking about Eric.

Flaps for take-off

There seems to be some confusion as to when flap was used for take off so I will try and clarify:
The take-off configuration SOP for the F2A and F6 was always to use reheat with flap down.
Normal take off in the other, lighter marks was in cold power with flaps up. However if it was decided to do a reheated take-off then flaps were used to give a lower nose attitude at lift off to avoid scraping the tail. If one was planning a rotation then reheat was always used otherwise the rotation would be fairly shortlived!
So, reheated take-off = flaps down, cold power = flaps up
Simples.

Re post 14

One of the reheats on 711 had been disabled due to a fault, but an entry was made in the limitations log and it was allowed to be used for one last sortie
A take off using only No 2 (top) engine in reheat and flaps down was a recipe for disaster as a certain USAF exchange instructor at Colt discovered in 1970. The pitch down moment was such that the nosewheel could not be raised. I hope therefore, if true, that it was the No 2 reheat that was disabled. My recollection of Eric's demolition of the newly resurfaced runway at Wattisham was that both reheats were at full chat

I remember after one of the Woodford airshows in the late 60s or early 70s watching two Lightnings take off in formation. One of them scraped its tail on the runway as it rotated resulting in a lovely shower of sparks.

Lightning XR711

I clearly remember the feeling of shock and surprise when I had a glimpse of a Lightning looking very sad and ready to meet it maker. I photographed XR711 at RAF Wattisham on 14th October 1973. The quality is not up to today's standard as it was a fixed focal length lens 200mm and on a very grainy film, but still a very evocative picture for me. Of course little did I know that the rest of the Lightning fleet would follow in the 1980s, something that I could never have imagined. This thread has helped me understand the circumstances that led to this Lightning ending up in this state.

Is that a Triumph Herald on the extreme LHS???

What a sad picture.

It's definitely a Herald on the left - possibly a 13/60 but hard to tell.

Go-faster stripe looks like a typical Vitesse, but could just be a Herald wannabe.

Didn't the Vitesse have a sightly longer bonnet to accommodate the straight 6 engine?
